PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 11/25/12 03:17 PM

Note: Previous "please use THIS thread for any of your testing" threads have been locked because they were getting really overgrown and unruly. The old threads (including any attachments that were uploaded) are accessible through the following links:

June 27, 2005 - August 28, 2006

August 28, 2006 - November 16, 2012

Please reply to this thread when doing any testing. All other test threads are deleted, meaning that any attached photos will automatically be deleted with them (that's just how the system works unless we "keep" a thread).

Heyfrank,

You're oh-so close.
There are two sets of "http://", there should only be one.
Between the tags, (enclosed with brackets), there needs to be a title. I just added the text "linky".

With those fixes, what you see when entering the post is:
[url=http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=799080&highlight=satellite+radio&page=3]linky[/url]

Which will look like this in the post:
linky

Otherwise, try doing this instead of clicking on the icon for inserting a web link:
1. Highlight the URL in a browser and copy it (control-c)
2. Manually type [url]
3. Paste the URL (control-v)
4. Manually type the [/url]
5. Then click on the "Preview Post" button. It should look like this:

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 04/02/13 03:27 PM

Ok, so here's what I did.

From your original link, I went to the page on photobucket where the picture lives.

Over on the right, there are some boxes, one of which is labeled "Direct Link". Click in there, and the box changes to "Copied" for a second.

Come back to the post you are trying to make, and click on the fourth icon from the left, above the post box. (Just to the right of the envelope.) I clicked on Non Floating Image from the options presented, but there are others to play with.

A dialog box opens up asking for the link to the picture, and I just hit Control-V, which "pastes" the information "copied" earlier from photobucket. Once you see the link info in the box, click on OK.

Once this is done, you can hit the Preview Post button, and see the picture appear as it will in the Forum.

Add text as necessary, and off you go.

Hope this helps.

Looks like you inserted it as a Link (the globe and a link of chain) rather than using the Insert Picture button, two more to the right. Once you have the link to the picture, as you obviously had, then click on the Insert Picture button, and when that comes up, select one of the placement options (I chose Non-floating) and then hit Control-V to put the link text in the dialog box and hit the OK button. It should look like this:

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 08/14/13 06:21 PM

Tom,

Instead of just copying and pasting the link to your picture, here's what you need to do:

When you have the link to your picture, and you are in the Full Reply Screen, click on the fourth button from the left, along the top, (just to the right of the envelope). At this point, a list will pop up asking whether you want to insert a non-floating, left floating, center floating or right floating image. I just use non-floating, but you can play with it. Then a separate window will open up, asking you to put in the link to your picture. Hopefully you used the Copy Link feature from Photobucket and then you can just hit Control-V on your keyboard and Paste the link into this box. Click on the OK button. and voila! your picture appears as below.

Of course this can all become moot if you figure it out while I am typing!

another picture posting test - 11/12/13 10:13 PM

Iím a big believer in conspicuity. The easier it is to be seen the harder it is for a cager to pull out in front of you (I hope). On my K1200S unless you want to run fork-mounted lights there isnít much room for auxiliary lighting products. I had a set of compact PIAAs mounted under the air snorkels that drew so much juice that if I was sitting in traffic with them on they would draw down the battery. So I bought a pair of LED replacement bulbs on line and tried to convince myself they really threw of an appreciable amount of lightÖ They didnít.
At the AIM show in Orlando I ran across Lewis Q. Preston in his booth Electrical Connection http://www.electricalconnection.com/index3.htm. He was showing a new product, VisiBillets. The amount of light these tiny housings put out was amazing. This was the first alternative high power light that I could mount inside the Tupperware and still have enough room for the fender to clear under compression.
The lights themselves are very well made, billet aluminum, solid and well sealed. They are also extremely bright, ridiculously compact and very inexpensive. Lewis and I started chatting and he is clearly a man into his craft and his products. A pair of lights sells for $79.00. I told Lewis he could double the price and it would still be a bargain. Hereís what Lewis said to me. ď Years ago I was in a terrible accident because someone didnít see me. So if I can help make more riders visible by charging less money thatís what I want to do.Ē I would have ordered the lights just because I liked his philosophy. But I didnít. I ordered them because they are small, high quality, very bright and cheap.
They arrived a couple of days ago and I installed them last night. If I can figure it out I am going to post some pics of the lights that show just how tiny they are and how much light they throw off. I am a big fan of Lewis and VisiBillets. Check them out.

Notice the .jpg

When you get a link to the photo on smugmug, it must have a complete file name, ending with .jpg. The real file name here is probably "UN2012 099-L.jpg". However, spaces get converted to "%20".

Hope this helps. grin

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 01/24/14 03:57 AM

And the reason that "http://" was repeated is probably because the tool that allows you to enter your image URL is pre-filled with "http://" to start with. You need to delete it and then just paste in your image URL (which already starts with "http://").

It looks like this is the last link you posted?
Code:
http://lawnchairboy.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/FART-2012/25800286_f8VBvd#!i=2135024885&k=xN5Zw6f&lb=1&s=M.jpg

The link you post has to be enclosed by img tags:
Code:
[img] [/img]

Even with that added, I couldn't get that link to work.

So, I looked at it on your SmugMug page, and clicked on the picture, then selected "Large" for a view size.

Then I copied the link for the large size picture, enclosed it in tags, and here it is:

When I composed this post, the link looked like this:
Code:
[img]http://lawnchairboy.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/FART-2012/i-xN5Zw6f/0/M/DSCF0007-M.jpg[/img]

Note: When posting, I don't use the "Enter an image" button, I just type the img tags manually, and paste the link between them as shown above.

That button just takes the link you paste and automatically adds the img tags for you.

As Kevin pointed out before, it also adds the http:// for you too. But if the link you add already has that, that won't work. If I use the 'Enter an image' button, I just delete that http:// and then paste the link in.

You should be able to copy and paste the link I made as text in a post and then see the image if you do a 'Preview Post'.

You're getting closer!

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 01/26/14 05:37 AM

Using the LINK you provided..........

Here is what my screen looks like when I click that insert photo icon (4th from the left). You'll see the blue highlited http appears

Then, on my Mac, I drop the photo smugmug photo address in the box. When I do that the duplication of the http is removed automatically.

I hit enter and this is what I see

Then I hit either Submit or Preview Post and see the result. But I realized I copied the photo address with the "img" in error, so I removed that and pasted only this part...

http://lawnchairboy.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/FART-2012/i-xN5Zw6f/0/M/DSCF0007-M.jpg

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 01/26/14 05:45 PM

There is a really simple method that should work for images that are hosted on any of the photo hosting sites. When you are viewing an image at your hosting site, the web browser is obviously showing you the image properly. So all you have to do is copy the URL that the browser is using to display that image, and use it in your forum post.

1) When viewing an image at your hosting site, right click on the image to display the image information (on Mac, this might be "ctrl/click"???). In the pop-up menu, select the option that copies the image URL. In Firefox, this is called "Copy Image Location". In Internet Explorer, it is just called "Copy".

2) When you go to the BMWST forum to post your photo, simply use the copied image URL. As already discussed, you can either use the "Enter an image" button on the full reply form, or you can manually surround the URL with "[img] ... [/img]". That is all the "Enter an image" button is doing for you.

The end result is that your image link should look something like this in your post window:

"[img]http://lawnchairboy.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/FART-2012/i-xN5Zw6f/0/M/DSCF0007-M.jpg[/img]"

If the image link that you are using does not end with ".jpg", something is probably not correct.

Note that using this method, be sure that you are displaying the image at the size that you want it to be when posting it to the forum. Smugmug appears to allow you to select "small, medium, large, x-large, etc." when viewing the image. With picasaweb, you may need to re-size your browser until the image is the size you want. But in any case, the image size that you see when viewing the image on the photo hosting site should match what you see when posting the URL into the forum post.

thanks for all the assistance. When I copy the image url from smugmug, it is not ending with a ".jpg". I have never had any issues before, I have tried from an iPad, and from a work windows system, no joy. strange.

I assume that you copied the URL that was at the top of the browser. That isn't going to work.

Also, you had a typo in the "[img]" tag. You had "[img:]".

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 01/26/14 06:03 PM

Hmmm, we crossed posts and I just read your reply. If you are getting the image URL by right clicking (or ctrl/clicking) on the individual image, and copying its URL, and the copied URL still doesn't end with ".jpg", that is very odd. Perhaps this is a Mac thing. If so, I don't know how to help with that.

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 01/26/14 06:14 PM

FYI, if I open the link that you were trying to use earlier:

http://lawnchairboy.smugmug.com/Other/SmugShots/6319699_hCTQcg#!i=398428210&k=Z4P2Xw8&lb=1&s=O.jpg

that is a link to a smugmug page that displays an image. That is not the same thing as a direct link to just the image.

If I then right-click on that image and copy the image location, I get a direct link to the image:

http://lawnchairboy.smugmug.com/Other/SmugShots/i-Z4P2Xw8/0/M/x-M.jpg

It is that direct link to the image that is needed. If this isn't working for you, I am stumped.

Thanks, I'll try again at home. I appreciate the help, really don't understand why this does not work for me anymore. In safari and windows, the jpg extensions are not showing up for me from smugmug in the address section of the browser. If i
Login to smugmug (never had to before) and hit the sharing tab I can copy link to pic that shows the jpg extension in the file name, but this still doesn't post the pic.

For the pic below, I just selected a different size on SmugMug, grabbed the link and it works.

There is a problem (not your fault) with some of the links that you're getting from SmugMug. Not really SmugMug's fault either, more like an incompatibility between the links that SmugMug generates for some pictures and the software running BMWST.com (I think.)

The only thing that I can see different, is that the original link you posted has more punctuation characters in it. It seems that this site's software doesn't handle those like it should.

The link you posted:
Code:
[img]http://lawnchairboy.smugmug.com/Other/SmugShots/6319699_hCTQcg#!i=398428210&k=Z4P2Xw8&lb=1&s=O.jpg[/img]

The link I posted:
Code:
[img]http://lawnchairboy.smugmug.com/Other/SmugShots/i-Z4P2Xw8/0/M/x-M.jpg[/img]

The link that I got for this picture is 'simpler', it doesn't contain some of those other characters, (like ' ! &, etc.)

Perhaps you could try using 'tinyurl.com' to make a shorter link to post. It's very simple to use. I'd show you an example, but I won't do it with one of your photos without your permission.

Unfortunately, it adds one more step to the process, but it might help.

This is the crux of the problem.

The link in the address section of the browser is NOT the one that you want, and is not going to end with ".jpg". That's because that is a link to a smugmug web page, not a link to your image. I'm not familiar with smugmug, so I am not sure what link you are getting when you try the "sharing" tab. But it sounds like that also isn't what you want, or perhaps there are some option(s) that you need to select in order to get an appropriate URL to copy.

I have one more suggestion that my help. If you open your smugmug page to the image that you want, and right click (ctrl/click on Mac?) on the image, do you get a pop-up menu that looks something like this (it will vary depending on what browser you use - this one is from Firefox)?

If you click on the option that says "View image info", (or something close to that in whatever browser you have), you should see something like this:

Take a look at the URL that is called "Location":. This is the URL that you need to use when posting to the forum. You can copy it directly from here. It is also what *should* be copied when you select "Copy image location" on the previous popup menu. But perhaps that isn't working for some reason. Note that this is NOT the same as the URL that is in the location at the top of the browser.

If you copy and paste this URL into the forum post (using the "Enter an Image" tool, or by surrounding it with the "[img]" and "[/img]" tags), that should do it.

I am on a Mac
I am also using Smugmug

When I go to one of my Smugmug albums and choose a photo, I do so by hitting the "COPY" button. Then "place" that photo address by going

here
and hitting control V

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-nMx4VpH/0/L/i-nMx4VpH-L.jpg

If I want the photo to appear in the post I go to the fourth icon from the left and Control V it there.

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 01/27/14 12:03 AM

Chris, are these the steps you are taking?

First I go to one of my smugmug albums and choose a photo. I click that photo and the queue shows up thus....

Note the SHARE button towards the top right of screen

After I click SHARE button I get this drop down screen. I pick GET A LINK from the menu

Then after I click GET A LINK this page appears. I choose the size I want by clicking the COPY. For a second it says COPYING and then returns to this view. Now, although I can't see it my CTRL V queue is THAT link. I can go and paste it by typing (hit command button) Command and the Letter V

This is what the LINK looks like

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-BT3WggR/0/L/i-BT3WggR-L.jpg

This is how it appears when I CTRL V the copied photo link into the bmwst photo posting icon

Hi Grumpy, I'm not sure about flickr. I use Smugmug.

I am not an expert on this, but I'm trying to help. Some may call this "the blind leading the blind".

Your photo address should have a .jpg at the end of the address. When you put your photos into flickr and then "share" them the address you get should come with a .jpg.

The software that bmwst runs on does not provide for embedded videos. The only way to have one usable by others is to link to it, Like This.

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 06/03/14 12:13 AM

Bill, use the 2nd icon from the left - the one next to the smiley face. Place your video address in there and name it "4 mile". You can't use the 4th icon from the left for a video, as that will only produce a photo, rather than the video. As Glenn points out this will produce a LINK to your video. We cannot host the video the way ADV/Smugmug do it. Hope that helps?

Re: PLEASE Use THIS Thread for any of Your Testing--Thank You! - 07/10/15 03:46 PM

Eric,

When you're looking at your picture in Photobucket, over to the right are four boxes under the heading of Share Links.

Click in the second one down - labeled Direct, and you will see the text in the box change to the word Copied.

Come back to your post and go through the process you already did when you tried to insert the picture, but when you're at the dialog box where it wants the address of the picture file, hit Control-V, for Paste and the info will be placed into the box. You click on OK, and you should be all set.

However, when I did this for your image, the link looked like this - http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x195/eej1/Colorado%20Motorcycle%20Trip%202015/image.jpg26_zpsjqes4ceg.jpg~original

That bit at the end "~original" after the .jpg? Well that shouldn't be there. I've never seen it before, and I use Photobucket, and I've never had this issue.

Once I deleted that portion of the text, this is what appears:

Chris,

Looking the info here - it looks like once you click the share button, you have an option to embed a photo (rather than sharing). Once you select this option, you can select the size, and then the method of sharing.

I don't have smugmug account, so I can't verify how this works for myself.

Hope that helps.

I just used the link you used, and put 'tags' around it.

So it looks like this:
Code:

And voila!

Wow, that's one beautiful bike you have there!! Wait...that's mine! smile Ok, can you explain how you did that(w/ the tags). You created exactly what I've been trying to create. I'm pretty technologically stupid.

Just a follow-up about posting a photo link from dropbox. I found some additional information on ADV. To get your link to work:
1. I enclosed the link with tags.
2. Changed the www.dropbox.com to dl.dropbox.com
3. Deleted all characters after .JPG

Which leads to this:
Code:

Isn't Dropbox changing their photo policy on the 17th? Do ot know if the change will affect the link or not.

Hi Lee - I composed that in open office. After it failed to post, I tried running it through a .txt too clean it up. That was the second post.
