I know we're all probably hard to get gifts for. Make plans now for START in Maggie Valley and Santa will no doubt get the subtle hint to inquire about your gear needs. And if the Santa that visits your house is the type doesn't take hints very well, you now have a excellent justification to request gear, because you've got to get ready for START!

Great Christopher - I'm happy a START works into your calendar - back to back events for you this year! clap dance revit

And YES! We're all absolutely looking forward to it right along with you. I spent the night at our host lodging in Maggie Valley on my way home from FART and had a chance to explore the area. (While Maggie isn't a new location for us, it is for me; as is the host motel for the group) That gave time to not only research group meal possibilities - but to aimlessly wander the surrounding area and roads. I enjoyed it so much, I wished I'd allowed time for an extra night's stay. (Actually, you could say that about any of the locations START and FART are held - and that's a testament to the collective efforts of many.)

For me, returning home to central Indiana after START /FART always leaves a bit of a sting in my side as I come to terms with the mostly flat and straight roads that are my reality here. That always creates an anticipation for the next event - made worse this year by some shoulder surgeries that prevent me riding at all. ohboy

I'm counting the days right along with you and others.

Re: START 2017 - Maggie Valley, NC - 01/09/17 11:11 PM

For me, the weekdays - with the reduced traffic - are my favorite. Coming from Indiana, I get a bonus in that my Wed ride - if planned correctly - offers a extra day of windy and hilly roads on the way to START.

Do you have a trailer option - if you could arrive early enough to ride Wed and Thursday, might be worth it. But I've always been a bit crazy that way, thinking nothing of driving all night to make a plan come together. My wife is not a fan of all nighters in the car.

I am not a fan of riding at night, but I have done more than my share of it. Last year Larry, Chris and I got an early start on the way home. I ended up leaving them in Shreveport and rode all the way home. So I think I could at least make it back to Texas on Friday night. Early enough that I could ride the rest of the way to the wedding Saturday morning. Of course, my wedding clothes will spend a week folded up in my saddle bags. Might have to bring boots besides my steel tipped MC boots...

I am leaving it up to Larry. If I don't attend START, I could probably ride out to Spring Torrey...

I think Asheville was the last time you were able to work us in? Looking forward to seeing you George and starting off the season right by getting in some miles on great roads with a even greater group of riders.

Likewise Dave.
Yes, I think Asheville was my last BMWST trip and also the last (hopefully) of my run of 4 rear flats over something like 6K miles.
I expect to be coming up to Maggie Valley on a new set of PR4's which hopefully will get me at least 7-8 K.
See you in a few months.

My current username is not the same one I used years ago. Back then I made a mistake by using my last name as a username and since then my personal policy concerning the internet has become more of a private one. Thus, I have since changed every username I use publicly on all discussion boards including this one.

I regret to report that I am not the guy who burned the midnight oil from Oklahoma! Somehow, though, I do have a recollection of that story but I'm not sure if it's something I experienced first hand at the event or read secondhand here.

I promise I am not purposely trying to be mysterious. My name is Brian and I disappeared for quite a few years so I expect most of you wouldn't remember me. I mostly lurked here on the board and was probably a bit meek at the two events I attended. But I did have a blast both times and met a few people whom I remember fondly. I haven't ridden my bike all that much in the past five years but I've kept it because of the sentimental value of it being the bike I've ridden to both coasts. I'll keep an eye on those upcoming dates in Maggie Valley with the hopes of getting back up on two wheels and meeting up with you fine folks again someday!

That's a gracious offer, not to mention the bragging rights of having a Jake Suite @ Marty Hill's. Will ping ya as the date nears as my plans are in flux. I'll probably do my usual stop-off earlier in the week at TWO. Mebbe we grab lunch or dinner in Dahlonega.

Thanks for your patience, Chris!

Just a heads up on making reservations - Ken has been in touch with our host, and they are returning voice mails and email/web portal questions and reservations. Much like the Chuckwagon in Torrey, the Creekside closes for a few months during the Winter.

So feel free to use the web portal to contact them and/or make reservations. Maggie Valley Reservations

OR you can call and if there's no answer, don't panic. Just leave a message and you'll get a friendly call back.

Re: START 2017 - Maggie Valley, NC - 03/05/17 09:28 PM

Hello everyone, here's a link for START 2017 Maggie Valley Routes

The routes are coded to show direction first, then the route number (The lower numbers are the shorter routes), then part A or B with part A going to a restaurant and part B returning to Maggie Valley.
Next in the name is the mileage of the route with the first number being the mileage for that part, then the total mileage for the day when both parts are combined.
I tried to put known roads within the route name and the lunch location is in all caps.

Receiving Routes From Others.

Your maps and preferences may be different than those of the person you received them from, so to be sure you ride the intended route. You must do the following.

Open the GDB or GPX file in your software, then make duplicates of each route (usually a right click will show the option).
Change the color of the Duplicate route (usually double click, then go to “Info” and look there)
Note the mileage, then Re-calculate the Original route. The mileage should stay the same.
If the route mileage is different, look for the color you changed the Duplicate route to. You will need to add a Waypoint or Via point to the Original route to make it match the Duplicate route. Once the two routes are the same, delete the Duplicate route, then load the Original route(s) onto your GPS.

Re: START 2017 - Maggie Valley, NC - 03/05/17 09:43 PM

As always ... MANY THANKS!
Posted By: marcopolo

Re: START 2017 - Maggie Valley, NC - 03/05/17 10:14 PM

Thanks, Ken. For some reason, when I download the GPX file onto my Mac, and go to open it, it somehow has turned into a TXT file. In the past, I've had the same thing happen, but managed to work through it. For the time being I'm stymied. Maybe a glass of wine will help.

EDIT: Didn't even need the vino. When I download the file, it adds a second suffix (txt) after the GPX suffix. All I had to do was delete the second suffix, and import the renamed file into Basecamp. thumbsup

Here's a Link to the folder which has a GDB file as well. I recommend people try the GPX first.

I thought we were going to make it to START 2017, but it looks like we'll be closing on a house in the Dahlonega area that weekend. After living in Atlanta since 1985, with a weekend cabin outside Dahlonega since 2003, we have finally decided to cut our ties to Atlanta.

The new place is a quarter mile from a winery, and 3 miles from a network of Forest Service fire roads.

You all are too kind. Ken and I would like you to track your MILEAGE! I didn't think the auto-typo correction looked correct, so I quickly googled -millage and glanced at a heading about figuring millage taxation - and went huh!? I'm used to being wrong, so I moved on and posted. dopeslap

But I couldn't get it out of my head. So I just spelled it correctly in the Google - does anyone still have a dictionary - and of course, two words, 2 spellings and two kinda similar meanings.

I've said it before - you just can't find good help anymore.

Unfortunately, I have to cancel. I just left a cancellation message on the 1-800 number for the owners, who are on vacation. As soon as I get a confirmation call back, there'll be a Creekside room available.

Sorry to miss this one, but as I suspected last year when I stepped down from co-hosting, a new career path would get in the way. Hope to see many of you at the UN.

I also hope that I'll have more control over my time by the time FART comes 'round.

May 3 : Move possessions to Dahlonega

Marty, I'm sure there's a good story for why you have one glove. Did you lend one to the One Armed Man in The Fugitive? lurk

My Left glove on my beloved Lee Park's pair developed a hole on the index finger, maybe from too much GPS screen touching thumbsup, so I threw both of them out.

Very true! My first 'road trip' on a bike was at age 17. I rode my GPz 7 hours to Frankfort, MI. A helmet and leather jacket and tennis shoes. Back then, I thought a helmet as ATGATT! Leaving for home a week or two later, I headed out at 6am FREEZING. Gloves? Why would anyone need gloves? 2 miles into my ride, I pulled over and dug out some dirty white socks and layered two pairs on my hands. whistle

Make Time NOW to inspect your bike and do a shake down ride. Check your tire pressures and take the time to examine your tires. Look over your gear while you still have time to make substitutions. Doing some stretching now will help your body respond and adjust later in the month. You'll thank yourself later, trust me. old read

Re: START 2017 - Maggie Valley, NC - 04/08/17 04:10 PM

There are just a few rooms left at our Host Hotel. For those of you on the fence, this is the first of THREE offerings we'd like to share to illustrate the point that you really should be in Maggie Valley for START this year.

On the way home from FART in Sparta last Fall, I took a bit of a detour to to do some recon in Maggie. I wanted to meet our hosts for 2017's START and doing so would give me a great excuse add another day of riding and to meander back roads and explore.

The sacrifices Ken and I make!!

Here's our Host Hotel - of which we have the exclusive use of for START.

Plenty of ride up, front row parking (right next to Bob Uecker).

Large rooms with rear balcony.

And clean! When's the last time you saw one of these?!

The parking lot social will have lots of variables this year.

Lounge on the patio by the pool.

Get in the pool.

Share your best lies under the trees.

Savor the creek and campfire scene and practice the art of story tellin'.

Or ask the Scarecrow to help wash your bike.

If you've not joined us before - Ken and I and everyone else attending would love for you to join us this year. We continue to return to these events twice a year because the riding is outstanding, and the folks you meet here are even more so.

You'll fit right in. thumbsup

The second of the three installments I mentioned will be posted by the end of the weekend in 'Ride Tales That Last' and will offer a small sampling of the riding and scenery one can expect in the area. Others will be invited to add their photos to that thread from previous visits as well.

Stay Tuned!

It's a game about miles
Blood, Sweat and Gears.
It's a whole new adventure
It's crunch time
You can't teach that
If the glove fits . . ask Ken if he has the other one. wave

Whatever your favorite cliche is; Ken and I offer you THE COMPETITION OF A LIFETIME an easy way to win some swag while riding.

Mileage Estimate Contest

The entry that comes closest to guessing the total combined actual miles ridden to START for the group, wins.

The Winner can select their prize and it will be mailed to them.

To secure an entry, simply submit one original photo from 2017 START per person entering.
For example: If you're in a group of 3, 3 photos would need to be submitted for 3 entries. Photos can be submitted individually or from one phone/camera representing your group. If group submission, please list your group members. Husband and wife teams are the exception and one photo can count for both.

A sign in sheet will be in the reception area for you to record your mileage when you check in.

We'll be tallying up the mileage for those who show up on motorcycles.

Entry forms will be handed out, collected and the winner announced at dinner Friday.

Photos can be sent by text or email. This information will be provided at check in.

A 'tentative' list of START rider's origins - as best I know - will be posted next week. I do not have complete information, so it will just serve as a rough guide. Remember there will probably be last minute changes after it's posted.

Deadline for recording your trip mileage is 5pm Friday.

********* Please remember to track and record you mileage to Start ***********

Also, the photos submitted for the contest entry may be used in a Ride Tale posting later, so let's get some good ones...or ones that could live on in infamy rofl

Lol. I will have to take the longer of the two possible routes, to cause extra confusion in this contest. Do miles in a 4 wheeler count double? 2 sets of 2 wheels. rofl

Out!

A real bummer too as I was going to expose all of you to my Son-In-Law who unlike me is one hell of an American.

I'll keep the cigars sealed up and ready for the Un which I can't miss or I'll have to answer to Mr. Roe.

The folks at the hotel are on vacation, but after the e-mail and voice mail I just left I'm sure the room will open up in the next day or so.

Enjoy friends, see you at the Un.

I've got a couple of riding buddies here in Clarksville, Gary and Jimmie who are going to join us starting Thursday. Gary rides an old Honda and Jimmy is on an '07 Road King. In addition, one of their friends, Chuck is coming as well.

FYI, I have a friend who lives in Maggie Valley and they just informed me that there has been a lot of construction on I-40 West of Asheville with stop and go traffic, so plan your approach to START accordingly.

I haven't been too impressed by Eagle Rare in the past. But, our local liquor store hand selected their own barrel and this one is VERY tasty and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, somebody drank most of it? dontknow

Well, I can't help you with the Bourbon, as the distillery I installed last fall has only vodka ready for consumption. I think the bourbon has to age a little longer.

The weather forecast for next weekend looks pretty good, but we are going to be using it to move boxes to our new house (closing April 28). About 15 more boxes have been added since I took this photo last weekend, bringing us up to about 400 cubic feet of "stuff":

For the furniture, we will be renting a U-Haul truck on May 2, loading it, then driving up to Dahlonega on May 3. So no START 2017 for us.

Ok, let's talk about that - I'm confident I would still find that stuff pleasant, but to be fair, after the two REALLY good bottles we'd already gone through, I think just about anything would have seemed good.

SWEET SASSY MALASSY!! The event you've waited all Winter for is just days away! beer clap dance

To give you something to ponder while you plan your route and pack up, here's some registration info and the current list of attendees and their origin states.

When you register, there will be a table adjacent to the front desk for you and those in your group to note your arrival and the distance you traveled to get to Maggie. It will look something like this:

This is the sheet we'll use to tally up the the total distance traveled by the group. We'll also have the mileage contest info for you to to send/txt your pictures to. Once you do that, like a Donkey Eatin' A Waffle, you'll be set to enter the Contest Extravaganza(!) Friday night at Snappy's

Note there are a few coming that I don't have info for, and remember - husband/wife and families will count as ONE for mileage purposes, but those individuals are in fact listed individually on this list! Hey - I'm not doing all your work for ya!

Re: START 2017 - Maggie Valley, NC - 04/21/17 08:12 PM

Just to rehearse the mileage contest:

1) When you arrive, record your personal mileage from your point of origin to Maggie Valley Creekside on the sheet provided.

2) To get your entry to guess the total mileage for the group, submit a group, selfie, scenery (or combination of such) photo to Ken or me from your journey to or while at START 2017.

Each photo will only count for one person - so if you are in a group of 5, you would need to 5 (different) photos for everyone in your group to get an entry. One of you can submit pictures for you entire group, they do not have to be individually submitted, but just mention who the photos are for.

2.5) Where to send your pictures will be revealed when you check in.

3) Everyone who has a picture submitted by them or for them will get an entry at dinner Friday night and we'll get our crack team of accountants to research and announce the winner before meals end.

**There's a very, very good chance there will be another winner announced for a unannounced contest (hint).

Ken will use some of the pictures in 'Ride Tales'. Our hope is that we'd get representative photos that document a typical START/FART.

If that still seems complicated:
To get an entry - submit a picture by Friday night.

Remember - Josh has been on a months long trip, so his mileage will be significant! read stir

Man. The little guy eats a box of doughnuts, a bag of chips and annum of chocolate covered pretzels and suddenly he has a reputation. I can't actually think of anything he's scared on this trip...

One time my first dog ate a whole German chocolate cake. We didn't think it was his doing until he "returned" it later that day.

Re: START 2017 - Maggie Valley, NC - 04/23/17 01:03 PM

Yes, the contest is a bit of a guess even if you knew exactly where everyone is coming from. You have to calculate how "out of the way" most of us might ride to get there. The final number could be pretty interesting.

The biggest "guess" is how to you calculate Josh Szurszewki and his family's mileage. From the point they were at when they decided to attend START '17 or from their departure from last year's UnRally in Red Lodge, MT on their trip of a lifetime! confused

For those thinking about the Dragon, Knoxnews.com says:

Motorists should expect delays amid ongoing utility work along U.S. Highway 129, known as The Dragon, in Blount County.

Utility linemen will be repairing lines along the popular, twisty route near Calderwood Dam through Friday, April 28, according to the Blount County Sheriff's Office.

"Please be aware and mindful of the linemen, as well as Blount County deputies who will be assisting with traffic," according to the Sheriff's Office.

I'm not sure where to get more up to date info. Just a heads up.

This seems a valid concern! Our intention is to list mileage from our start in Portland October if last year (had to go home after the Un and work into September!) since we "intended" to come to START but weren't sure f the timing would work. I'm happy to give as many hints as the contest organizers think are warranted.

Here's one to start: we went from Portland to Bakersfield, then Altus OK, back over to San Diego, down to Barra de Navidad MX, up to Austin, down to Dauphin Island, up to Nashville IL, over to Nashville TN, down to Key West, and are now working our way up the coast planning to turn inland after Wilmington NC....

Good luck!

On a side not everyone. Some here know what occurred almost a week ago when I was on a short trip with a dear friend. I am still coming to START though I will be a little anti-social. I am looking forward to seeing everyone Friday for dinner. On the Saturday ride(s) I will more than likely skip and do a solo trip. Riding in a group, as of now, will be a bit challenging for me.
I will see everyone Friday!

That's fine Mike, we're glad you're going to join us!

For Mike and any other new comers - START/FART isn't structured much, apart from the group dinner Friday night. There aren't any set rides or group rides - apart from what you set up yourself. Some folks ride solo. Some ride with a buddy or two. Some others will go in a larger group. Where you go and with who at what time is totally at your own discretion. Not everyone rides everyday and some won't ride at all.

The other main ingredient is the Parking Lot Social. From late afternoon/ early evening until late at night, the parking lot turns into a large gathering of riders conversing, meeting, looking at bikes, telling lies and consuming beverages of various types. Generally there will be various other gatherings here and there that branch off from the parking lot - and Maggie has several places to facilitate that as well.

Don't be afraid to introduce yourselves and make yourself known! There will be old friends who may be sitting in groups, this is not meant to be exclusionary, so feel free to join in and say hello! beer thumbsup

Talking about invoking an obscure rule, will you be counting your mileage when your bike is in the back of the car on a trailer? I want you to know that I am not asking this for me but for those that are competitive about all they do. grin

Well said. About 10 years ago I bought my first BMW, a K 1100 LT. Found this forum and noticed they were getting together in Gunnison. Rode there without knowing a single member. Left after having been 1. Welcomed with a big hug from Momma Hoon 2. Chased AZ AL for a few seconds when headed towards the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Park 3. Had the privilege of meeting Paul M, the nicest and most humble rider I've ever met. 4. Ended up hosting a gathering of the Pied Pipers on their way to WV.

And then today I had lunch with a BMWST member I had never met and enjoyed a couple hours of conversation and made another riding friend.

Looking forward to the ride reports, the slight embellishments of various events and the pictures, oh yah, the pictures.

Have fun everyone. See you at the UN!

Bob - I love how you're always thinking of the other guy!

NO! Trailer miles DO NOT count. I'll be down for a goose egg mileage wise for the trip.

BS
You're hauling 6 wheels...
so mileage, times 6, divided by 2 = total.
smirk
I'll have 4 tires, so I'm multiplying mileage by 2.

Then passenger, so redouble.

Sadly, GT still sits in garage, amac supposed to get it soonish...
So I win fewest miles this year, I think.

Re: START 2017 - Maggie Valley, NC - 04/25/17 12:53 PM

Ohhhh Bob will have to recalculate and multiply by the radii of each wheel, as figured below.

x a x b = x (a + b) * (√ + ∞) / (ϟ*Ǝ) - (⅓)
---------------------------------------------------
‰ * number of times Ken says "Cheese" when they take his picture

Seems like amac would be happy for you to get the cobwebs outta the GT burnout revit

I've had a quick ride around the neighborhood and everything feels fine - I'll ride to the Drs late this afternoon. A younger me would go ahead and pack-up the bike and ride it on down. I enjoy the solo ride down and back almost as much as I enjoy START.

Apart from my long suffering wife, I'd had good input from others here and will still trailer on down. If I rode down, I'm not at all certain I'd still have a long suffering wife . . whistle dontknow computer lurk

Whoo boy! I came close. A couple of weeks ago, after yet another backbreaking day packing boxes for moving, I started to fill the tub for a Dr. Teal's epsom salt soak. I like a deep soak, so I had taped over the overflow opening... Of course, I forgot the water was running, and found the tub overflowing. We were to have a showing 2 days later...

The laundry room is immediately below, and fortunately, the original sheetrock ceiling had 5' x 2' opening where I had a rotted trap replaced a couple of years ago. An acoustic tile ceiling below the sheetrock covered the opening. So, most of the water drained straight to the acoustic tile ceiling, leaving the sheetrock intact, only slightly damp. With a lot of fans running, everything dried out in 24 hours, and I replaced the acoustic tile ceiling at a cost of $80.

In the process, I discovered that the floor drain in the laundry room is not the lowest part of the floor....

We are hanging out down the road at Stonebridge RV park - holed up with the pups in a tiny cabin. Got a bit wet on the parkway today, but I imagine the scenery was amazing (don't know though as I couldn't see a bit of it through the fog around us and rain and mist on the shield!).

Thinking of maybe going down to Deal's Gap tomorrow as we've never been here and it seems like we should - but who knows. Weather was great once we got here wink

Ken will be starting a thread in Ride Tales where pictures will be posted and stories shared.

Thanks one and all for a wonderful event and we'll look for you at the UN and FART this Fall. clap

I get to see him even less than I do you guys (he's my best friend's son; known him since his arrival on the planet -- he's turned out to be a great guy).

Hope to see many of you at FART, where I hope to make up for my unsightly out-of-pocketness.
