Several of us have had the same issue. I'm sure the problem is that the reservations site shows the rooms as "blocked", and won't allow them to be reserved online. I'm sure calling the hotel will work just fine.

EDIT: just called the hotel and reserved a room for Bob (Endobobdds), and me.

Jennie and I are IN and reservation made Wed-Sun.

Craig, why wait if cancellation is so generous at only 2 days. They only require a credit card but don’t charge it. It was gr8 seeing you and Terri. Maybe this time we can grab a bite to eat and chat more.

Dave, not understanding the arithmetic for 4 days...2*75+2*110=370 and that averages out to $92.50/day....unless I’m just java dopeslap

What’s wrong with our math? 2x75=150, 2x110=220, 150+220=370, 370 divided by 4 = 92.50 per day average. You stay 4 nights to get that average.

The image says $87.50 for 4 nights. What am I missing here?

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 10/07/17 10:59 PM

I see that now, thanks for pointing it out.
I think I sent the info to Dave that the hotel sent me without checking the math.
We were going back and forth on rates to keep it under $100 per night, so we were averaging and saying it had to be a 3 night stay to get under $100
We will get it corrected.

A BIG SHOUT OUT to Greiffster and all of our relentless administrators for making this happen. I wish I could take credit for the idea, but one of our faithful members woke up from a nap rofl stir and realized he'd been having a nightmare where he was trapped scrolling through page after page looking for posted routes only to find posts about plans to sell a bike, plans to buy a bike, plans to attend, plans to un-attend, plans to get a new battery for a pacemaker, mower, flashlight, garage door opener, cell phone, laptop, dog collar and the Cracker Jacks Decoder Ring. stir . . . and beer caps - good thing you don't need batteries to open those!

Don't be so sure about the limits of Photoshop. Case in point - look how distorted and excessive Photoshop made this anonymous Indy 500 intoxicated enthusiastic spectator look after his intoxicated thoughtful friend in the hat poured water on him (he was out of booze) ! ohboy

There is quite a colorful narrative that begins about 5:45am leading up to that photo, and as one can imagine, the story continues afterwards. It will make for a good parking lot tale sometime if anyone has interest. We hold 16 seats between 3 immediate rows of seats for the 500 - so there is more going on here unseen than just the unknown fan in awe seated next to me taking a picture of the Modern Version of David.

In my defense, I will only say that Brian - the water pouring gentleman - and his son had taken his sons GF for a tour of the aforementioned Infield. Brian's son had left me in charge of a large container (accounts as to the relative amount of beverage that was remaining in the container when the chain of custody fell to me is disputed between several parties) of his seemingly innocuous beverage concoction. In their absence, I discovered how tasty said beverage was. And curiously addictive. beer By the time they returned from the infield, the mystery concoction had worked its magic not only on Brian and his son (who off camera is seated - but only because he is propped up), but also on . . . wait for it . . . Yours Truly ! Shortly after this photo was taken (for posterity purposes spittake) my wife offered to hold my drink for me. It seemed very thoughtful to me at the time, since I'd dropped my phone twice by then wave - I figured she was wanting to spare the innocent fans seated in front of me the possibility of me spilling my beverage on them. . . spittake Alert readers will have surmised by now that IF that was a concern of hers, it was not her primary concern. rofl

Many in our group that year I have known all of my life. Even so, many were overheard saying variations of this sentiment: I have never seen Dave so . . . colorful. I must have had a great tan that year??

And yes, I did get the recipe for the addictive beverage whistle

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 11/06/17 02:56 PM

I hope to be able to make this one since I missed both the UN and the FART. My wife was diagnosed in April with primary progressive MS. It only occurs in about 10% of the MS cases and occurs later in life. Unlike the relapsing-remitting form of MS, this one steadily gets worse with no periods of improvement. She had been losing the use of her left leg for several years but the doctors were unable to diagnose the problem. Finally a neurologist realized it wasn't muscles or orthopedic but the nerves from her spine and the MRI showed the tell-tale lesions. There was no drug known to affect this type of MS but one was approved several weeks before her diagnosis. It is only known to slow the progression of disease, not stop it so we won't really know if it is working since we don't know what the rate of progression would be without it.

I've been busy trying to make the house manageable (rollators on both floors and a chair-lift from the 1st to 2nd). We've worked with a builder drawing up plans for a single-level, living-in-place home and are finalizing the deal for a lot to put it on. Right now my wife isn't comfortable with me being away since if she falls (which has happened) it can be very difficult for her to get back up. So I'll need to see if I can find someone to stay with her while I'm at the START. I also need to work on her new-found anxiety of what will happen to her if something should happen to me.

So I've missed seeing you all and hope to see you in April. In the meantime, hope everyone has great holidays. Stay safe.

George, sorry to learn of troubling issues you and your wife are facing. Sounds like you're putting your best foot forward and tackling complicated needs and issues head on. Certainly you have your hands full. We're all hoping the new medication is successful in dramatically slowing or halting the progression of MS.

We're also hoping that by April, you'll be able to slip away for some long overdue and much needed you-time and a few days of riding and time spent with friends can be re-energizing and invigorating as anything - legal or otherwise.

Best Wishes.

I've updated the attendance slide on the first page of the thread, and also posted it here below. Unless there is a special announcement, sign up updates are updated on the second slide on the first page. ALSO Standard Rooms are getting tight, so if you're on the fence, you may want to consider firming up a room and if things don't work out, you have plenty of time to cancel.

I'm not sure which days some of you are arriving, so I've made my best guess based on your geographic area. If I've got it wrong - SUCK IT UP, BUTTERFCUP shoot me a PM and I'll take care of it. Hey All, I'm still a bit on the fence about whether I'll be able to make this one due to the new gig... But, in the event I can make it, I'd sure like to save the $20/night and get a standard room as opposed to paying for one of the suites (per the website, there are no standard rooms available as of this evening.)

So, if anybody who has a standard room reserved finds out they're not going to make it, would you be kind enough to PM me and let me know so I can try to snag the reservation?

Thanks!! wave

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 02/03/18 03:46 PM

I did something stupid. dopeslap
Riding down to Cedar Key with Chris K we were on a lot of roads they sanded and in some cases put gravel on the bridges because of the recent ice/snow. Once we got into southern Georgia the roads were straightening out and we were making good time. Most of the time I was in 5th or 6th gear.
So here is my stupid part. tongue We came up to our next turn which came up a little quick. I guess I didn't down shift from 5th gear. I was leaned in the turn and I start to give it gas to straighten the bike up. The bike stalled and slip the rear end. I didn't realize the stall and thought I was sliding in sand. So I am off the seat trying to ride out the skid. The bike ran out of momentum and violently high sided pile driving me into the ground. All of this at 10-20mphs. Six days in the hospital. The hospital recognized there was something wrong with my shoulder they wanted me to get it evaluated when I got home. I have to see my Doc on Monday to get me into the Orthopods to evaluate how bad my shoulder is separated. I can tell them it's bad, I can't hold my arm up.

Chris K and Joel went the extra mile for me. Joel came down with his truck and picked up my bike, all my gear took it back to his shop. Chris came down to the Hospital in south Georgia took me to meet Deb north of Atlanta. She got me home. Craig called every night and talk for at least a half hour each time. That really helped me take my mind off my situation.

According to Chris my bike's only damage is a chunk taken out of the windshield.

Now here is my note to myself. Down shift before a turn. dopeslap Hahaha. At least I can laugh on paper! Hopefully I made sense here, pain drugs mess with my already bad writing.

Christopher - Great news! Enjoy Prague, and while you're there, have a glass of Krusovice. It's really good beer. It's pronounced crew-so-VEE-chay with a slight roll on the "r." I'm sure you'll sound like a local when you order it! rofl

Take a stand, quit this meaningless and isolating job immediately and go to work at Taco Bell where you can serve others international exotic food with the down home dialect so rare these days at such places.

Brain - GO FOR IT!! All I can say is that if this trend you and Christopher are STARTing continues, we may be forced - FORCED I say, to host a International START/FART. Very happy for the both of you, whenever I head across the pond, I have to pay my own way - and that hardly seems fair, what with you lollygaggers flying to and fro while others of us toil at really, REALLY important things like measuring float values of Battery Tenders.

Have a great time the both of you and enjoy.

Does this mean you will have to ride your own GSA to START, as Foot's GSA is to big to push out of the trailer?

109 to Hot springs then basically 19E to Blowing Rock

Anyone else already getting antsy about this trip? I need to do a service on the bike and get that moving sometime before the SOP dates for maintenance on trips like this (the night before). I really need to at least do a 6K if not a 12K. I know the brake fluid needs changing. I should probably rotate the air in the tires too.

I usually have the ATL crew offering to come over and "help".... but something tells me my new location maaaaaaaay not be so conducive to that happening this time. rofl dopeslap

Has the Permafrost melted up your way, Shawn?? Time to un-mount the front uni-ski from you bike?

With warmer temps making brief appearances here and there, it's a great time to not only be sure you've gone over you bike and given it what it needs for START and the coming riding season; it's also a good time to practice full-on-gotta STOP NOW!! events. It's easy to forget in the excitement of just getting out on the bike to look after controlled stopping and object avoidance. Head out to a parking lot and ease yourself into full-on braking. Do several exercises, starting easy to get familiar again with your brakes. Once reacquainted with your brakes, find a back road and be sure to practice braking from the upper end of the speeds you ride. Get comfortable braking from those speeds.

Those roads Kinsley favors can be narrow and Garmin dontknow sometimes doesn't keep up - so brush up on low speed turnarounds too, in the unlikely event rofl you'll need to turn around. whistle

Matt I sent you a PM. Dave, if Matt's room doesn't work out I'll reach out as well.

Looking forward to it!

Steve - When/if you grab Matt's room, remind the desk that you'd like a standard room if one opens up (assuming you'd prefer one). I will continue to monitor the room availability as well.

I am not sure I will be healed in time to make the Start. BUT if I can does anyone need a roommate. I am 7 weeks into my ribs healing and 5 weeks for my shoulder surgery. I have another 4-1/2 weeks to go. Physical Therapy is going well, painful but well. This is a good maybe for me, so if you need a roommate let me know.

Now if I can get my bike back from Craig's rofl

We're a month out from Blowing Rock and here is a link to the START 2018 Routes.
Note: Route 1 goes to Shatley Springs and they said they will be very busy on Saturday, so you may want to ride that route on another day to avoid crowds.

Thank you very much for posting the routes for the event.
Thanks for all the time and effort you spend on providing us with some very entertaining routes.
This set of routes are more improved then previous. I am not sure if it is a technic you are using or something Garmin and BaseCamp have done.
But recalculating the routes has been very smooth. Thanks. thumbsup
I am looking forward to explore some of the new to me roads.
See you in a few weeks. wave

Let me also add my thanks to Ken for the routes posted above. We all know that this sort of thing takes time, patience, and attention to detail. I've just downloaded them, and imported them into Basecamp. All I have to do is load them onto my GPS (and actually ride them in a month's time).

Thanks, Bob. We're sooooo looking forward to this ... even more than we usually do. FART 2017 seems so long ago now. I interviewed for my new job on the Friday of FART. Since then I've moved, started this job, Hoontang helped me find a house to lease for a year, Terri signed off at her VA Beach job, then we did our household move, the VA Beach house sold, and we are now getting settled into our new digs and new routines.

As always it'll be great to see everyone ... folks we never get to see enough. However, this time we have the added benefit of having great day rides to and from the event!

Great news, but if you are having trouble, come in the fourwheeler. You have good reasons.

Just a reminder that the BRP Is closed at the Linn Cove Viaduct due to road re-surfacing and is currently closed between MP 276-280 due to mud/rock slide, this is very close to Blowing Rock. Check your routes if they are using the BRP..

The couple days I might have been able to ride I had other commitments I couldn't avoid. Riding south isn't a bad way to start the season though.

If I have to, I will rent a trailer to get there. I really need to get out of here for a few days. Actually, if I can get out of here, I don't have to worry too much about getting back. Our oldest son lives in Cincinnati, and I can stay there on the way back until the weather is decent.

I have nothing but thanks and praise for those that put in the time and effort to organize the El Paseo's and all the other BMWST events here on the East coast. However, the START's and FART's that Craig, Ken and Dave have coordinated over the past few years have truly been a fantastic blend of fellowship, great locations and routes to ride. All the rest of us simply show up for a fantastic event that I would not want to spend just a weekend at!

Bob, since you really didn't answer the question I will take a stab at it. The original event (El Paseo) was a weekend event that started Friday night. Over the years through BRR, Helenback, START, FART and whatever this morph's into in the future it has extended into a long weekend. I love making it for as many days as I can. Once I get there, I never want to leave. Every time I see these jokers, it's like coming home to family. smile

This one will be bitter sweet. I am coming....that's the sweet part. smile It's only bitter because there is only so much vacation in the year. I have this one pinned back to a Friday arrival because of that vacation time limitation.

Tick....tick.....tick...... laugh

Yes, it used to be a long weekend event, but because the roads and sights are so terrible in that general area, some of us decided to make it a longer event.
So to let the cat out of the bag, there will be a Pre-START meeting held on Tuesday night in Franklin, NC at the Microtel Inn & Suites.
Some of us are actually naming this a Post-FART Event, but that is another story.
If you are needing to get out of the house sooner or if you are trying to avoid a weather front and can't figure out what to do, join us on Tuesday night in Franklin, NC.
I can even provide you with a route to Blowing Rock from Franklin.

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 04/09/18 04:18 PM

Also remember arriving on Thursday (in my situation) means late around 9pm. I will work Thursday and leave a little early around 4:30pm, beat traffic out of Atlanta and head up to Blowing Rock. So yes I am "arriving" on Thursday, but really only riding Friday - Sunday. I am sure there are others who maybe doing the same. As for those people that do have enough vacation time to arrive on Wednesday, I just do not talk to them :-) jealousy is such an ugly character trait :-)

I don't get to ride roads like this very often. It's almost 1500 miles round trip for me to go to these events. If I'm going to ride that far to get there and home again, I'd like a little longer time to ride down there. Two days just doesn't seem like enough.

I did a 256 miles birthday ride today to check out how a long ride felt. Mechanically and strength wise my shoulder is good. I still have a muscle that alternates cramps and spasms. My physical therapist showed me how to lessen it while riding. Mileage wise It's only about 50-60 miles more to the START. So I think I will be riding instead of driving clap

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 04/12/18 05:57 PM

I think that the events have always started on Friday, and more and more ewe started showing on Thursday to have Friday just to ride. Opening up that day en masse inspired more people to come from farther away.

I know that when Shawn and I were running the BRR events, I started getting there on Wednesday to give me a full day to ride and do what I wanted before host duties began to occupy my mind.

And so, it just keeps moving back. Pretty soon, these will be like UN rallies

The battles have sidelined the best of us, and I think one of the things that makes these gatherings so great is the shared unspoken knowledge that everyone there eked out a victory just by being there.

John - I'd been following your wheel thread and hoped you had it sorted. I was looking forward to seeing you and Rush and that bike you've brought back to life. I guess it's easier to do that by driving a few miles or doing a shake down ride with you instead of going 500 mile to meet at Blowing Rock.

You can't trust the middle of April for weather North of Kentucky. I hope this works out. I don't have a trailer anymore and putting the bike in the back of my truck with the cold and ice is just as problematic as trying to ride down the icy driveway.

This just sucks.....

I'll be on pins and needles until Wednesday.

A little chilly, but you've got a 'Stich and Gerbings. If you're shoving off at lunch on Thursday, the roads should be fine according to this. cool

Mine is slightly more dicey. I was planning to leave from work in the early afternoon, but depending on morning conditions, I might drive to work and then drive home before departure...

The temps for travel are not my problem on Thursday. I am seriously concerned about being able to get the bike down the driveway because of ice build up. We had 1.5" of sleet and rain that hit before the 7 inches of snow. I have snowblowed the driveway twice in the past 24 hours and barely put a dent in the sleet/ice layer. I might have to make a path with an ice spud the way I used to in the spring in Michigan. One problem though, after 11 years in SC I don't believe I still have one.

Hey Matt Sturgis....... Didn't we move BRR to the last weekend in April for some reason?..... I can't quite remember what it was.

That is always the plan, last weekend in April for START and last weekend of September for FART.
The hotel was booked for that weekend (a knitting convention) and the room rates went up considerably starting May 1st.

Yep, a little bird had told me room rates were a consideration. As a past planner I absolutely understand that being a factor in planning. As a rider that greatly appreciates all the work that goes into each event, I also know it's difficult to make everyone happy all the time, nay impossible.

As a relocated rider that only has the opportunity for one motorcycle trip this year due to family planning issues, the possible loss of this trip due to weather just sucks rocks.

Just to be clear, Ken and I are just as frustrated as many of you are about the weather. We're going to brush up on our 'impacting' the weather skills. spittake

Most of this goes without saying, but since it's come up in discussion, here's some insight into this weeks START planning.

Kinsley and I** invest quite a bit of effort into these events, as have all of the previous and current hosts of the varied events on BMWST. There are, of course, trade offs involved in every decision and we consider these completely. In this case, there were a couple of significant factors that were involved in moving the START weekend up a week. The hotel had a large group of quilters on our 'normal' weekend and if we pushed START off to a week later than normal, we were hit by significant room rate increases. As our group grows, it's becoming more and more challenging to find lodging that can accommodate our group size - so it's not as easy as one would think to 'just pick another hotel'. It goes without saying that no matter the arrangements - with a group as varied and large as ours - there are always some who would have preferred different arrangements. We understand this, it's part of the dynamics of large groups. But we do try our hardest to hit 'the sweet spot' when making arrangements that will satisfy the vast majority of the group. And in this case, we felt the best we could do in this circumstance was move the weekend up.

We can't control the weather, and as I write this I'm watching small white flakes falling outside my window. This IS NOT normal for Indiana or many other areas of the nation. Be that as it may, I take what comes and will be heading out tomorrow as planned. Hopefully on two wheels. If the snow gets a foothold, then I'll go dig out the trailer. I do still have my fingers crossed for my WI and MI friends.

As always, we are interested in your feedback in how to make these events better, so please continue to seek out Ken and me with your input. We strive to put together a great weekend for every START & FART, and your feedback helps make that possible.

We look forward to seeing all of you and we will raise a collective glass on Friday to all who had to stay home.

Later is better, but of course there are no guarantees. I recall El Paseo in Blairsville, GA, April 22-24, 2005. On the Saturday evening we had heavy rain, and then a ridiculous cold front roared through during the night. When we got up on Sunday morning, nobody could leave because they couldn't get their key in their ignition and couldn't open their sidecases:

The very simple fact of this matter is that it doesn't matter when events are planned. As someone who has spent the better part of a career planning large-scale events, including many events for this board, e.g. UnRally in CO, RidingSmart weekends, etc., no one can predict the weather, especially in the mountains. I've ridden in the mountains when the radar was completely green and yellow and didn't see a drop of rain. I've also been there when the forecast was for sun and 80s but at higher elevations, snow was falling. I've ridden in the mountains in late February when it was in the 70s. During the very first El Paseo in Cherokee, NC, many of us either didn't make it at all or were detoured due to a freak snowstorm. I rode the last 100 miles at night in a driving sleet/snow storm and was ultimately told by a park ranger that I would not be able to cross the mountain from Gatlinburg to Cherokee because the road across was closed due to 13" of snow at the top. I stayed in Gatlinburg that night and rode the long way around to Cherokee the next morning. It is what it is. No amount of planning can dictate a weather outcome. Dave and Ken are correct when they say that a lot of work goes into these events and they should be thanked. If anyone seriously believes that their efforts would produce different results, I'm sure they would gladly surrender the START/FART baton. Oh, and BTW, I've also sat at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the first weekend of qualifications in mid-May and watched it snow horizontally across the front stretch. No one ran that day. Ain't Spring dandy? ;-)

Ok kids, back to your corners before this becomes a festival "oh yeah, well I did xxxxx"

Nobody is busting on Dave and Ken. Not me, not Shawn, nobody.

Nobody is denying the efforts involved, time spent, bridges crossed, burned or otherwise.

What you are reading is the voice of frustration at crappy weather that may keep people from seeing other people they miss and want to spend time with.

Deep breaths. Chill.

Tick tock....

Didn't take it that way, at all. Just making a point that no amount of planning matters when weather is involved. We're all frustrated by this as this is a huge disappointment to all of us who were looking forward to this weekend. Ain't no deal...

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 04/16/18 07:58 PM

Thanks one and all - and I apologize for an unnecessary post earlier. As Fernando can attest - I'm probably the king of a couple unfavorable categories here. I at times start a post and get distracted mid composition (the dangers of working from home), and by the time I finish and post, others have already posted - often negating my post; and in one case appearing to challenge the powers that be by a innocent video clip, because by the time I'd posted, the discussion direction had changed and the clip could have taken a different meaning. dopeslap ohboy It was a funny clip too!

This was the case here, by the time I finished and posted, Kinsley had explained why we moved the weekend and my comments were redundant. Apologizes - we're all enthusiastic riders frustrated by the current weather. The other list I top here? I am unquestionably the king of typos and edited posts - a bit odd since it can take me so long to compose a post. I was tempted to delete my earlier post, but then felt that created another set of issues.

What is great is that we are an understanding bunch of folks who give each other the benefit of the doubt.

I'm packed and heading out on two wheels in the morning! bike

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 04/17/18 12:30 AM

Last week of April or mid-month is no guaranty of good weather; the first El Paseo had snow on the sides of the roads and edges of some roads the last week of April in 2002, I believe. Take a look at some of the pictures I posted last year on Moto Photo. I learned long ago to bring the heated gear even in the summer up there. I sense a lot of angst out there from our northern riders, for the weather in their areas which I can relate to, and hope everyone who can escape the snow and ice can make it. If you can't get here, we will hoist a toast in your honor as we know you will be with us in spirit. Maybe more than one.

Bob, it's not looking good for either of us right now. There's a big front headed my way that is supposed to pull moisture from Lake Michigan and curl back on us. This morning it was forecast as 3-5 inches ending after midnight/Thursday AM. As of a few minutes ago, they backed it off to 1-3 inches with ending late Wednesday night. Mitch and I will be checking it all......day.....long. Due to the 48 hour hotel cancellation policy, we really need to make a decision tonight.

The weather Thursday will be great. High of 50 and sunny but a little windy. You know the Parkway is closed from Holloway Mountain Rd to Beacon Heights so you will have to take 221 or come through Boone if you are coming in from the south or west.

The routes I sent for START avoid the closure. Heading North on the BRP you will get off on 221 towards Blowing Rock, then take Holloway Mountain road back to the parkway and into Blowing Rock.
You could stay on 221 for the 4 miles or so, but there are a lot of side streets and driveways with local traffic in the section closer to town.

The routes I sent for START avoid the closure. Heading North on the BRP you will get off on 221 towards Blowing Rock, then take Holloway Mountain road back to the parkway and into Blowing Rock.

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 04/17/18 05:55 PM

Well, this pretty much sucks. I usually leave on Tuesday when I go to START or FART, and stay at our oldest son's in Cincinnati. I leave Wednesday morning and ride to the location of the event. I cancelled my room for START due to the weather. I went into our local dealership about Noon today, and found out the owner left a couple hours earlier pulling an empty trailer to a bike auction in Cincinnati. I could have ridden with him with my bike in his trailer, and then arrived in Blowing Rock on schedule tomorrow.

Well, I don’t get them all and the reason I knew of this closure is because of someone on this START thread so it’s a collaborative effort. Just be sure to follow someone that’s in the 21st Century smile

I am in route from Colorado. My gas mileage is down to about 35.

Can someone bring a Twin Max or equivalent so I can check my 1150 GSA?

I did the valves and have the feeler gages with me if needed.

Thanks

It was a brisk 25 degrees this morning on the mountain. It's now 70 degrees, now that's what I call a spread! They are calling for nearly 80 tomorrow. I hope this warm air make it north for the snow bound folks.

Sorry to say this folks, but I'm out. frown Wednesday night's forecast up here looks pretty sloppy - and even if I could get out of town, the weather the rest of the time isn't quite what I was hoping for; I'm not sure I'd really enjoy this trip. More than half the reason to go on this trip was to be able to ride and hang out with you my friend. I understand and respect your choice. You will be missed. frown

My bike is in the back of the truck pre-snowpocalypse that we are are supposed to be getting starting at 1 PM CST here in Milwaukee. My wonderful wife has offered to drive me down South of this mess and drop me and the bike off, then return back North with the truck.

I'm still in. See you Friday when I get to Blowing rock.

I keep forgetting to post this. If anybody coming up from the south needs a place to stay tonight, Thursday, or Friday, or on the return trip, send me a PM, e-mail me at libssd@gmail.com, or phone 404-640-9086.

Enclosed garage with tools, guest room (and a very comfy sofa if more than one). From our place on the west side of Dahlonega, it's about 270 miles to Blowing Rock via the BRP.

Pam and I are riding up to Tellico Plains for lunch at Tellico Grains today, so I won't be paying much attention this afternoon....

Re: Spring Tune-up Appalachian Riding Tour (START) - Blowing Rock, NC - 04/18/18 11:15 PM

Ok, so....my journey to START has taken me from Raleigh, NC to Akron OH now residing in Stauton VA. This journey has taken me through 30mph wind gusts in WV and OH, a buzzard strike to the helmet at 60mph in OH, a tornado, in OH and then snow...in OH. Anyone seeing a pattern here? On the upside I highly recommend WV State Routes 3 and 28. They are smooth, well maintained and not heavily traveled. US 40 and 11 in VA were astonishing. Just wished the traffic was a little lighter. Heading down the BRP from Waynesboro tomorrow (well what sections are open) then on to BR, hopefully by 1700. See everyone tomorrow.

ADMINISTRIVA

** Friday's Dinner will be held in the same pair of rooms as Breakfast. (That's on the ground floor) We'd been holding out the chance of having dinner on the patio, but.... well...... Our Florida Clan might get Frost Damage if it's below 60. rofl Bar opens at 5:30, Dinner at 6:30.

** NAG NAG NAG whistle Please remember to record you bike's odometer reading at the front desk. Ken and I would prefer not to embarrass anyone in front of the quilters by having to ask you for it in person. thumbsup rofl stir

** The Bike washing station is the parking area between buildings, you'll see the roped off area.

There are some quilters here already. I'm offering up a Whopping $5 (or 5 Loonies Canadian money) for the first person to get a quilter to ride of the back of their bike around the parking lot (or further).

I know I didn't get to stay as long as I had planned and didn't get to follow Bernie for one of his epic rides, but it was still great to see everyone. I did enjoy one day of scenic dirt road riding.
Looking forward to riding east again in the not too distant furture!
