It's open enrollment time again, and this year, I'm contemplating seeing what I can find on the market for a personal health insurance policy that may just be cheaper for me than what I can do as part of the group at work.

Any one done this? Maybe have some tips on how I can evaluate one plan against another and ensure that what I'm looking at is ACA compliant so I don't get the tax hit as well?

I don't want to discuss the merits of the law, I just want to know how to use it's provisions to save myself some money.

Rant at your own peril!!

Here in Oregon we have Cover Oregon, which was our super expensive started way early and then failed spectacularly exchange. The only people that I know of who did well going through that also used an agent, which is either an actual insurance agent or broker, or can also, here at least, be someone whose job is just to find you the best plan for your needs - as far as I know, they get a small commission per person signed up for each month said person pays said person's premium.

Do they have things like that in Florida? I'm sorry to say I don't even know if you guys had a functioning exchange or if you were supposed to go through the federal one, but I bet someone here knows more...

All I know is our HMO has been rated @1 in the country recently and near the top consistently.

The upside is that I'm only 50, and I can do it for about $3500/year through our group, but I was hoping to try the marketplace since our offerings in house are pitiful.

Something tells me you're smoking crack, but let us know if you get anywhere.

I'm a man, and I can change, if I have to, I guess.

One of the questions that is asked in sign up process is, Do you have access to a health care plan through your work or through a family member. If you answer yes, then there are no subsidies and the pricing is not inexpensive.

And unless you make very, very little (I feel like I'm at the low end on this board, and I make, as above, just enough to not qualify for a subsidy) you're not going to qualify for much of any subsidy, and what you're paying now is less than I'd be paying for solo coverage a decade + younger than you.

But that's not to say don't try - I mean, what have you got to lose?

I'm not concerned about subsidy so much as I am about getting a more cost effective individual plan.
