For about an hour.

And then, under described conditions, your body "crashes".

Quite likely that was a sugar crash. The caffeine in there isn't a ridiculous amount; as you noted upthread, it's got slightly less caffeine than a cup of coffee. Anyone who poo-poos Red Bull as a "drug delivery system" needs to back away from their coffee right now. grin

Apart from the caffeine, an 8-ounce can of Red Bull has 28 grams of sugar. You'd probably get a comparable crash if you downed an 8-ounce glass of orange juice.

Want to put 28 grams of sugar in perspective? Well, you know those little packets of sugar you put in your coffee in the morning? Those are 3.5 grams each. Imagine putting eight of those in your cup of coffee, and you start to see where the problem is.

I've never bothered to try the sugar-laden Red Bull before, but I kinda like the sugar-free version in the afternoon on long day rides (if I don't have coffee with lunch).

You are right, Mitch. It was very likely a sugar rush and crash, although I'm pretty sensitive to caffeine too, and with the recent illness, extreme heat and conditions it was the absolute wrong thing for me to ingest. I am a very cheap date when it comes to sugar or caffeine. If you do not ingest them much, as I don't, they can have a pronounced effect. I understand everyone is different, but for a rider, especially under extreme conditions, drink "energy drinks" with caution.

While they manufacture Red Bull without regular sugar, do they also sell it decaffeinated? Perhaps, their "sugar free" version is their idea of "de-caf". But you won't catch them removing the caffeine wink

Forgot to include this: I do believe the purpose of energy drinks is to act as a drug/caffeine delivery system.

Totally non-scientific and a sample size of one, but: That hasn't been my experience.

Like any other physiological condition, I expect that susceptibility varies from person to person. A doctor quoted in this article suggests that maybe 5% of people are susceptible to sugar crash.

Tried my first one at at a MotoGP event one evening in Monterey when they were giving them away. My friends and I visited more bars and had many more cocktails that evening had we not tried one.

It's great for the party crowd before and after a evening out on the town.

Lot of young people knocking back Red Bulls & mixing them with booze. I agree with you though; not wild about their product, but love their promotional stuff like space jumping and Flugtag.
