Looks like TDOT is adding signs in January to keep vehicles over 30' long off of 129.

Besides some local delivery, why would they want to be on there in the first place. Crazy.

We have two local passes here. Really really tight roads (and one has fallen in what can only be called complete disrepair), so much all heavy traffic is interdicted.
Authorities have put signs every 100 meters or so at the feet of both passes but every year you can rest assured at least a couple of semis get stuck in the bends, requiring the fire brigade and other emergency services hours of work to reopen the road.

According to what I've been told, the semi drivers (mostly from Eastern Europe and with no local knowledge) just follow what the GPS told them as "shortest route" and since the freight company cannot be bothered to buy lorry-specific units, the GPS just assumes they are in a car.

Crazy stuff.

Now if they could keep large groups of leather clad riders on loud cruisers off as well I would be impressed.

I guess 40' motorhomes and 5th wheel RV's are still legal on the Dragon.

From TDOT's web page:

Quote:
Following the completion of an operational and safety review, the Tennessee Department of Transportation has determined that vehicles over 30 feet in length will no longer be allowed to utilize a mountainous section of US 129 (SR 115) in Blount County, known as “The Dragon.”

Assuming that means 30 feet from nose to tail, then that rules out a lot of vehicles, including 40' motorhomes and most fifth-wheel trailers.

"Limits for commercial vehicles longer than 30 feet on US 129" from the headline, so that leads me to believe the RVs are still in play.
