sidecar rig

I took this photo on Monday. There is a fairly large sidecar on the opposite side. I am curious about the fork modification and the wheel/tire combo. Any thoughts?

Car tire on custom wheel on the back. Perhaps a "Stoker"?

Haven't seen the front mod over on the ADV Hack forum.

Bud and I both posted this on ADV - Bud beat me, but my post was better ;)

Word is that rig belongs to and ADV memeber named Duncan who maybe lives in VA. I was told the rig has an EML front end, which is a bespoke fork setup to reduce trail/steering effort. Pretty rig - looks $$$!

I always assumed they had the wider front tire for more contact with the ground giving you more steering power. Reading this, it seems a little more involved than just that.

Good reading there :)

I opted for a larger front tire for less complex reasons - mostly increased contact patch for handling/control, but also longer wear. Since the tire doesn't really lean, you end up just wearing the center (as if you were rolling on the slab all the time on two wheeler) and it burns through a spendy moto tire quicly that way.

I replaced our 120 front tire with a 130 rear tire with a bit higher profile. The current tire has almost 20,000 miles on it and is *almost* to the wear bars in the center of the tread. Our rear tire is a low profile 17" car tire, and we have 10,000 miles on the current one with a couple thousand left it in.

Pic stolen from ADV.

The car looks big enough to carry two passengers, or 4 dogs!

Are Josh and I the only hack owners on this site?

We are not - there are a few others but they are a quiet bunch.

I have an 04 R1150RT with a Champion Escort. I run a Battleax rear tire on the front and the same rear car tire the Josh does on the stock rims. I have the DMC steering mod. I have also gone to a 37/11 final drive.I just got back from a 2200-2300 mile ride to Ft Lauderdale and Key West on it.

Bill, I may have seen you riding north the same day that I saw the rig pictured. I was riding south in south Florida and saw two RTs with sidecars headed north.

We happened to be in the parking lot at Deal's Gap when Duncan pulled in on his rig - he was on the way home from Florida still :)

We were there with some START folks and I didn't want to get left behind so I only chatted with him a moment. Rig looks even better in person (bike is a triple black GS with that "sparkly" black color) and he seemed a nice guy.

Laura snapped a pic of us talking (we caught up to hom riding back to Maggie valley after the Cherahola and I got some video of him too!).

One red and one blue? That was us. We got back to the hotel in Ft Lauderdale at 7:50pm if the time frame helps.
