San Diego (Oceanside) rides

Redman

Recommended Posts

Some pics from rides during recent visit to daughter & SonInLaw, who are now in Oceanside, near CA-76.

(Previously they were in San Diego proper, just off the 8.)

Temps most days were just barely above 60 degF, (and at higher elevation like Julian or Palomar were in the low 30s and snowing some days).

I did venture on the 76 to east of the 15 on a couple days.

And on 3 days went north of Fallbrook.

THis ride we intended to make it to CA74 Ortega Hyway.

But the H-D was dead, no power, black, dark, after a stop in Murrietta.

Between the two of us we had absolutly no tools. And it seemed like nobody at the coffee shop had any tools.

I was about to go in search of some tools, but then I slugged the battery box with my fist, and it came to life.

I was still suggesting I go find some tools, suspecting just a loose battery connection, but SonInLaw was concerned about it dieing again out in some canyon, so we headed to the I-15....... which was 4 and 5 lanes of stop and go traffic. So got to split for about 10 miles. Then saw a car on side of road changing spare tire, and traffic back up to 80 mph.

Back home at garage, did find loose connection at battery negative.

So we didnt get as far as we intended. Any disappointment I had in not making the full trip is offset by me having something to harrass him about har har har.

No, actually, was good to have an adventure with SonInLaw.

Had other family stuff planned on the next day, our last day there, so this was the last ride. Putt bike back in storage mode.

Now back home to 20s - 30s. Snow predicted for tommorow and the next day.

I trailered my bike out to CA from Michigan last month. Stayed in Dana Point which is about 50 miles North of San Diego. I lived in the area about 15 years ago but had no motorcycle. Only a 3 series sedan. I road all those roads in the car back then and I put those rides on the bucket list when I got my RTW last year. Ortega Hwy and Idyllwild was awesome as well as Rt 76 down where you were. By far, my favorite in the area was Angeles Crest outside of LA in the San Gabriel Mountains. Like it so much I did it 2 days in a row.

I........................................... I lived in the area about 15 years ago but had no motorcycle. ...............

I can understand why you wanted to get back to there ON a MOTORCYCLE.

I had never been there, but had seen pictures in magazines and posted on forums...... then daughter & SIL were moving there (2014 San Diego proper)......so thought I should visit them and have some access to a bike there somehow, eh, huh, huh

We visited there the 3 times when they lived in San Diego proper, just off I-8. So on those visits I would get out of town on the I-8 or the CA-52 and head out to Julian area or Dulzura area or Japatul area.

Now they are in Oceanside, near CA-76 & I-5, so take the CA-76 to get out of suburbia. THought would have get way east of the 15 for some good stuff, but also found some good riding north of Fallbrook.

HGezaYv.jpg

Oceanside is just south of Camp Pendelton, and about 35 miles north of Sandiego.

THe Dana Point is about 70 miles north of San Diego, so way off this map.

It looks like you found some of the good roads. Bummer about not having any tools to fix the battery problem.

Funny, we used to ride to Julian for pie on weekends. Haven't seen anything about that lately.

Hi Bill, Yes, I thought so too. Although also found some roads that were that were not.

Found Pala Temecula Rd to be marked 'Private, No Entry" (and an other big sign with some language I could not even recognize).

FOund Liley Rd to be a dirt road off of CA-76, and I dont mean gravel, I mean dirt.

And that is when I found Cole Grade Rd, and I figured any road with "grade" in the name is worth a try, thinking of Palomar SOuth Grade and East Grade.

Later thought of Crouser Canyon Rd. I see is marked with a 1 & 4 on the map.

SonInLaw suggested the De Luz and other roads north of Fallbrook, as he said someone suggested it to him. I was a bit concerend that it may not be far enough away from suburbia.... but I was wrong.

I expect to be back in the area in May and again in August.

Should chat with you sometime about some other roads up there in northern SD county, with now being in Oceanside (I-5 & CA-76 area).

Yah, no tools between the two of us. Me not having any tools being away from home like that, and, really isnt much of anything that I could do on the 1150RT bike anyway.

And he didnt have any tools, just because he doesnt..

I told my son in law that on my bike at home (82 Suzuki GS1100GK) I carry a tool kit I asseembled, and actaully carry some spare parts if going out of town -- and that really surprised him.

Hee Hee, on my next trip out there, I should get a little took kit to carry on my bike, and tell my SonInLaw it is for his bike har har har

Funny, we used to ride to Julian for pie on weekends. Haven't seen anything about that lately.

Julian is higher elevation, so was snowing there a couple days.

That Julian Pie Company building in my picture is in Santa Ysabel.

THe H-Ds parked there (not the group leaving) was interesting in that was a group of German (?) tourist on rental(?) H-Ds. One guy strolled over to take a quick look at the RT, just a quick look in passing.

Last couple times I was to Julian, Feb last year and the year before, the place was jammed with tourist.... and that was in Febuary. Mid 80s in San Diego and mid-low 60s up there in Julian.

I think you must have missed a turn somewhere. Pala-Temecula is definitely not private. I don't know about any "Liley". Did you mean Lilac? Also paved.

Yah, probably missed something.... or I was an idiot that day or something.

I was on CA-76, past Rice Canyon (that had rode the prior day), and I thought the GPS was showing I was at Pala Rd, but was big "private" signs there. Which was surprizing since is marked as S16 on the map.

Have looked on Google maps just now and I cant figure out were I was then, maybe I was at Pala-Somethingelse road. And now I see that Pala-Temecula Road doesnt actually meet CA-76, but is there in town near the light and the casino. Okay, I can find it next time.

So went further east, to what I thought was Lilac (yah, Lilac not Liley), turned south on that and in about 1/4 miles was a dirt road.

Google Map Link Liliac Rd

So went further east on CA-76 yet and saw the Cole Grade Road and took that just to explore, and that was good.

Oh, Ah, Ahh-Haa, now I see, I went to where Liliac Rd meets CA-76, should have taken the Liliac Extension Rd.

.

Next trip out there, the top of my list is Palomar Mt (have done on 2 prior years) and Ortega Highway.

And har har har Pala-Temecula Rd and Liliac Extension/Liliac Rd.

Thanks for the pics. Seems like the left coast guys don't write as many ride tales as in the past. I always relied on them to help me get through the cold Indiana winters.

Maybe they don't want to get out when it is so terrible cold, you know, 62 degrees.

So this mid-western guy had to go out there and do it.

A lot of us moved on to other things. Some started a family. Others retired and moved away. Many had to suck it up and get a real job. It sure was a lot of fun!

I'll have you know a few weeks back it got as low as 27° on my SoCal AM commute.

Had to break out the electric vest :P

My daughter did say that had frost a few weeks ago in San Diego (maybe same day that you expereinced). People at her work were talking about how long they had to sit in driveway with wipers running.

Somewhere west of Ventura along an unmarked section of CA-1 between US-101 and the water. We lived out that way until 2015. If you have an RV there is a great place to park for a few days.

How's the RT holding up?

Hi Dennis (Laney)

@ 141+k it's getting looooong in the tooth.

I had to make a change as its reliability is questionable.

Fix, replace, supplement....

Initially the plan was to ride the RT in cold/wet conditions but the Zero is working out quite well.

I'm hanging on to it for its range so it sits patiently with a battery tender attached.

Ah, a ways north of LA area.

I should get up that ways, but at present am still exploring around San Diego.

Get to L.A.bright and early on a Sunday morning. I-10 West ends with a sharp right turn and a tunnel to PCH. It can be busy and crowded for the first 5 miles or so, but eventually becomes 30 miles of nice riding along the coast. Find a way around Oxnard to US-101 and Ventura is just to the west.

Nice. Have heard mention of ACH a few times before, so looked to see where that is. Ah, north of LA.

I rode Angeles Crest about a month ago. What an awesome road. There's a reason many of the locals from LA ride it frequently. Only problem was the occasional small rock slides around some of the bends. Had to dodge rocks about the size of footballs a few times. Must keep your antenna up at all times. Jay Leno Garage records many of his shows up there.

I liked the ride so much, I spent another night in the hotel and did it again the next day.

I often manage to include ACH (or the somewhat adjacent Big Pines Highway) in my trips to or from points north. It's a lot more fun than going over the Grapevine on I-5!

There are trucks with big plows on the front that regularly clear the road of the baby heads. The sound they make when hitting one of those rocks at 15-20mph will wake you up.

I hope you took advantage of the other great roads in the area too. Like Big Pines Hwy (thanks Bill), Little Tujunga, Big Tujunga, Upper Big Tujunga, Angeles Forest Hwy, Azuza Cyn, Glendora Moulntain Rd, Glendora Ridge Rd... Haha, I've got myself all worked up! I may have to take another mountain ride again today :rofl: Or maybe hit the Mallibu area: Tuna Cyn, Topanga Cyn, Saddle Peak, Schueren, Piuma, Latigo, Mulholland, Decker, Little Sycamore.

Group rides on Fridays are not unheard of around these parts. Lunch at the Griz often happens. Rides usually start at the Shell station 4530 ACH. Let us know.

I stopped at the Long Beach dealer while I was out there and test road a 310 gs which they just got prepped that day. The salesman was very good and told they get together and ride in that general area almost every weekend. Told me to call him any time I wanted to go,.

Like Big Pines Hwy (thanks Bill)...

You're welcome, but the credit goes to Carl (C_Williams), who showed it to me on the way back from Oakhurst a few years ago. It's a hell of a lot more fun than 138 for getting from 14 to I-15.
