Seat Latch

I've latched onto the parts to convert this cop bike to a dual seater.

Got hold of a rear seat, complete rack with grab rails and foot pegs.

I fitted full sized touring panniers a few years ago.

Has anyone ever seen a rear seat latch sold on it's own.

I know they are part of the number plate assembly but in reality it's just a shorter cable and different latch.

All this stuff is like hens teeth here. I got all these bits coming from Texas as it is.

The seat was cheaper than shipping costs for the complete bundle.

As I thought, these things are made of Unobtanium.

The only one on the planet I found was at a wreckers in the USA and he sold it as part of a lock set. Every lock on the bike for US$175. No thanks.

So oil those cables and latches cos if they break, It'll cost you hundreds of dollars to replace em with a BMW part.

I pulled the lock and latch from the cop bike radio box. Made a couple of brackets and Bob's your Uncle, Seat Latch.

Is it the Mother of invention or the only way out?

1 inch box tubing screwed under the seat with that pin lock plate attached finished the job.

The rear seat pops up when unlocked. Perfect....

OK, so first, RobinW, you rock!

Second, can you even tell me where you could even find the civilian number plate on the parts diagram, assuming I was willing to sell my children to buy it?

I'm about to dive into the same conversion on my 2009 RTP, and I have the seat, the grab rails, the rear rack, the pegs, etc. I may have to do pretty much what you did, but I was hoping to have it be more original. I have a secret source for parts stateside.

Dan I use the MAX BMW Fiche to identify parts.

So Parts / CattleDog / Fiche from the main page or this link goes to Hex Heads.

http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51560&rnd=07242017

It's under Frame, Fairing Cases.

And it's called Licence Plate Bracket / Saddle Lock.

I can't get a direct link to it.

The only difference to the cop bike is a shorter cable and a different latch.

Other than that the actual Plastic plate holder part is exactly the same.

MAX lists it at US$294 and I assume that's without the lock barrel.

Also, the police panniers are too far forward for a pillion to get their feet on the pegs.

The city panniers have to be moved back, removed or replaced.

Good Luck

Here's mine now:

I managed to find the original latch at my secret source here in the US. I've bought most of that wreck already. Your bike looks great Robin. Mine's a little more black on the sides. I'm going to TRY and move the police panniers up and back and see if I can get a rider on there comfortably. I love how narrow they are in profile, but of curse, that makes them bigger to have a reasonable volume. I'll mock it up with a rider (my kids or my wife) on there before I start the 3D modeling of the new support frames. I'll need something to replace the excellent side damage protection from the police racks. Obviously, I'mm leaving the police engine guards on.

There is a set on ebay, plate, key switch all together for 1/2 that price.
