I knew a guy that was a national park climbing ranger. He was one of the fellas jumping out of the back of those chinooks. I remember him telling me about his first time doing that. The pilot thought those mountain climbers were all idiots with a death wish. And how he jumped out onto the snow. With his feet firmly planted on solid ground, he looked back and thought "Now THAT looks dangerous! Those guys in that chopper are gonna die for sure!"

I think they deliberately use these maneuvers as training exercises, so the pilots don't have to learn that stuff in a war zone.
