As the title infers "Not Another Oil Thread!"

So this is to address the oil specification for RT's years '14-'18 per the Instruction Manuel Pg. 178, Sec. 10

**************************************************************************************************************************

Engine oil

Engine oil, capacity max 4 l, with filter change

Specification SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2, Additives

(e.g. molybdenum-based) are not permissible

because they can attack coated components

of the engine,

BMW Motorrad recommends, BMW Motorrad ADVANTEC Ultimate oil

Engine oil, quantity for topping up max 0.95 l, Difference between MIN and MAX

***************************************************************************************************************************

 

More to the point the "SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2" and labeled as "BMW Motorrad ADVANTEC Ultimate oil"

When doing a bit of research on the required oil and wanting to do a basic decode of Part #1 = "SAE 5W-40, Part #2 = API SL / Part 3 = JASO MA2"

 

Per "The Petroleum Quality Institute of America". Part #1 = "SAE 5W-40" and (Part #2 = "API SL"

Part #1

"SAE Viscosity Grade" - The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines a numerical system for grading motor oils according to viscosity. The suffixes (0, 5, 10, 15 and 25) followed by the letter W designate the engine oil's "winter" grade.

(I my own words per say, the low and high operation temperature range)

 

Part #2

"API Service Categories" - American Petroleum Institute (API), API Service Categories

 

SN, Current Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control, and seal compatibility. API SN with Resource Conserving

matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.

SM, Current For 2010 and older automotive engines.

SL, Current For 2004 and older automotive engines.

SJ, Current For 2001 and older automotive engines.

SH, SG and SF Obsolete

SE, Obsolete CAUTION - Not suitable for use in gasoline-powered automobile engines built after 1979.

SD, Obsolete CAUTION - Not suitable for use in gasoline-powered automobile engines built after 1971. Use in more modern engines may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment harm.

SC, Obsolete CAUTION - Not suitable for use in gasoline-powered automobile engines built after 1967. Use in more modern engines may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment harm.

SB, Obsolete CAUTION - Not suitable for use in gasoline-powered automobile engines built after 1951. Use in more modern engines may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment harm.

SA, Obsolete CAUTION - Not suitable for use in gasoline-powered automobile engines built after 1930. Use in more modern engines may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment harm.

 

Moving on to Parts #3 and #4.

Part # 3 and #4

The motor oils that meet the JASO T 903:2006 standard can be classified into four grades: JASO MA, JASO MA1, JASO MA2 and JASO MB. The classification is based on the results of the JASO T 904:2006 clutch system firction test.

Furthermore, the motor oil's Dynamic Friction Characteristic Index (DFI), Static Friction Characteristic Index (SFI) and Stop Time Index (STI) should be within the following limits according to the JASO 904:2006 friction test:

Dynamic Friction Characteristic Index (DFI)-----------≥1.45 and <2.5------≥0.5 and <1.45

Static Friction Characteristic Index (SFI)----------------≥1.15 and <2.5------≥0.5 and <1.15

Stop Time Index (STI)----------------------------------------≥1.55 and <2.5------≥0.5 and <1.55

 

The JASO MA range is further divided into 2 distinct ranges - the JASO MA1 and JASO MA2 ranges - as follows:

Dynamic Friction Characteristic Index (DFI)-----------≥1.45 and <1.8-------≥1.8 and <2.5

Static Friction Characteristic Index (SFI)----------------≥1.15 and <1.7------≥1.7 and <2.5

Stop Time Index (STI)----------------------------------------≥1.55 and <1.9------≥1.9 and <2.5
