Medjet

At this year's FART, one topic of conversation was medical evacuation programs in the event of an accident, particularly on a ride that might not be near a close-by medical facility. In my most recent Medjet newsletter, they announced shorter term membership programs, for up to 8, 15, 21 and 30 day increments. Here is a link for those who might be interested.

Thanks Randy.

Good info.

We've known more than a few who have utilized this service, unfortunately, but we're glad they had it.

Welcome. They have a great reputation. I purchased my membership prior to my Americade/NE trip this spring solely as an insurance policy. Glad I have it but hope never to use it. Clearly, the way they make this work economically is through careful actuarial experience where the high cost of rare medical jet evacs is spread across the pool of non-users. Pretty good model.

Very good service with a few exceptions. If you're injured overseas, and unlucky enough to end up with a self-important and/or poorly trained doctor, that's who tells Medjet if you need evacuation. In effect they are asking a doctor to say he, his hospital, and his country can't handle the job so you must be evacuated. You end up being very much in the power of a single person who might or might not place your interests above his own pride. Med-jet also doesn't offer a motorcycle rider policy for anyone over 75. If you are injured and run into problems, having an advocate (family etc) back in the States to argue your case is essential, regular communications being pretty difficult in many places, especially if you're hurt bad. That said, overall it's a good plan and I carried it for years until they "aged me out".

Yeah, will also be hitting that wall in a few years. Not a great feature but until then its a good deal. They shipped my bike back home after a small incident that left me unable to ride due to a separated shoulder.

The age cap for the motorcycle product has been a topic of discussion on the MOA board. The consensus seems to be that older riders are more likely to have more serious injuries in a crash, all other things being equal, which in turn will create more risk to the business model. Since this is basically an insurance policy, they may have had to justify the exclusion (and the higher price for over age 75 in the non-motorcycle product) to the insurance commissioner's office in the state where they are chartered. It may be that the data and justification is available if someone pursues it.

Makes you wonder what actuarial info they use.

In talking to them, I was told that they farmed some of their stuff out to an outfit in London (Lloyds?). This discussion was about 6 or so years ago. They implied that they had no choice, the rule was imposed on them. This all came from one of their representatives at a bike show. Definitely age discrimination in spades, and it's not even being talked about in the current election frenzy. Got to get more of those dodo's in Washington on bikes I guess.

Great comment. Happens here in the states as well. I had a serious accident 2 years ago in Idaho (live in Texas) and the physician in charge of my medical situation mishandled my release. As a result my spouse had to fly up to escort me home & when we landed I immediately ended up rushed to a local hospital for an extended stay. I should never have been discharged.

The attending doctor made an error & MedJet couldn't fly me home because his paperwork was inadequate. The hospital ultimately reviewed the situation & reimbursed us for all expenses incurred but that was small comfort at the time (I was pretty sick).

All that aside, now that I can ride again I wouldn't hesitate to use MedJet on an extended trip here or overseas. It's comforting to know we have it and, lesson learned.

They have a diamond membership for those 75 - 84. Only covers one trip per year.

My guess under 75, majority of use would be injury, over more cases from health issues.
