Referencing THIS ARTICLE , it's amazing how far we've come with driverless navigation technology. It was just 2004 when no car could even finish DARPA's riderless challenge at any speed. Now AUDI wants to tackle the Pikes Peak hillclimb at race speed with no one behind the wheel. I really like the fact that they're looking for true race numbers and not setting some wimpy goal like "hey, why don't we try to do the Pike Peak hillclimb without a driver at 50 mph!" Shows real chutzpah! Good for them. I can appreciate the naysayers who can see where this tech is eventually leading us, but I think the technology, challenge, and brains behind this is pretty incredible.

Top Gear had a bit a while back with a 3-series that did the same thing. They showed it around the track once to let it "learn" and then it did a flying lap at speed without help. Pretty impressive.
I don't really see a practical application for this technology in cars, but it's definitely interesting.

Here's a good video that gives a glimpse of their challenge and the amount of nuanced control required PIKES PEAK hillclimb The video gets started at the 1 minute mark. You'll only need to watch 60 seconds of driving before realizing, (a) these drivers have nuts the size of Manhattan with skills to match, and (b) it appears impossible to do this without human input. I had watched the original DARPA driverless challenge 5 years ago. Nobody could complete the relatively simple course and speeds were often not much more than a crawl. To do Pikes Peak at race speed driverless is really Star Wars stuff.

......I don't really see a practical application for this technology in cars....... This may be one of the greatest under statments of this century Only time will tell I'm not so sure. What's very interesting to me, is that they are using an advanced GPS system to position the car. This is huge because I always felt the biggest obstacle to driverless tech becoming widespread would be rolling out an infrastructure to utilize it...i.e. If the cars required video referencing off white lines or some type of embedded magnets or whatever in the road surface, who's going to pay to retrofit all the roads? With GPS all we need to do is shrink and reduce the cost of the whole system within the car, something we're amazingly good at. There very well may be driverless cars somewhere down the road (20-25 years?). IMHO, this would have an enormous positive impact on jobs, traffic, the cost of additional roads, stress reduction, accident rates, fuel consumption, vacation travel, and more, plus as usual with brand new widespread tech, lots of stuff we can't even think of. I really believe the wins are potentially enormous. However, and this is a big "however", there is one group that could slow it to a crawl if not kill it...lawyers and potential litigation. (NOTE: That's a comment on the effects potential litigation could have on this technology. Please don't hijack it into a pro/con lawyer thread.)

This will just make it safer.
