I have Motolights. They're good for conspicuity, but in MCN's driving lights test last year, were one of the worst performing (in both 35 and 50W versions) in terms of additional light provided. A set of good lights mounted high (as on the BMW mounts mentioned above) would be far more effective.

Curious about your HID comment, what is it that you don't like?

OK, for my two cents worth the only lights worth installing are HID lights. I'm just finishing up my install of low and high beam HID on my 09 1200 RT. I'm using a set from Alpha-Bid.Com with micro ballast made by JEM. What I like most is the instant on feature. NO warm up time like previous models I have used.

As for auxillay lights, I am moving my Trail Tech SCMR-16 35 watt HID spot beams to the RT. I bought a Wunderlich engine guard and a set of 1" clamps from J.C. Wittney to mount them on the top bar (in front of the jugs). You can also swing them out to mount at close to 45 degree or 90 degree angle.

A litle further back on the middle strut I'm puting a set of foot pegs for comfort. Much better location than anything else I've found. Most are too far forward for comfort.

I can try and get a pic or two of it this weekend if anyone is interested. Just PM and I'll see what I can do. After my presentation on Thursday (gotta get back to it now, but just needed a break).

MCN's light comparo from Nov 2008 shows the PIAA Cross Countries (recommended) as having an effective distance of 250', and the Lazer Star HIDs as 200' (recommended). Actually, the plain old Lazer Star halogen (MR16, like Motolight) won the comparo. Over 250' illumination, and $160 for the PAIR instead of for one. A bulb burns out, and it's $7 instead of $70 - and you can get MR16 bulbs in any color you want, whitish, bluish, amber or whatever. Re current sraw, 8.25A for the halogen pair instead of ~5A for the HIDs - It's not like the RT is lacking in alternator capacity, so I don't see that as an issue at all, at least on this bike.
