I LOVE COLORADO!

I will never forget riding in for UN I to Gunnison. There is something so magical about Colorado. My very first motorcycle trip was on my Sportster to Canon City, CO for a woman's motorcycle conference. As I rode out Hwy 50, and saw the mountains for the first time in my life, I had to pull over and cry. They moved me so.

The trip on the Sportster was amazing and memorable, but it was nothing like what I found in Gunnison. The gathering of the people from this board was a bonus I never imagined. Lifelong friendships were formed. I am looking forward to hugging old and new friends.

I'm so excited! clap

We will be there all week. Looking forward to seeing everyone, having some great rides and getting some fishing in on the Arkansas.

We used to go skiing in the Dillon area every year for spring break when our kids were younger and living at home. I always wanted to go out there during the summer. I'm really looking forward to this trip. I'm hoping to go up to our Upper Peninsula and take US-2 over to Montana, and then down to Colorado.

As I recall, the remnants of a cold, a 1/2 can of a power drink and 113 degrees in Nebraska almost undid me mad ( I chose the emoticon that most closely resembled my skin color at the time grin ) Those were some FUN times, Mr. Roe. Thanks for escorting our little entourage into the wilds of Colorado before dawn. I will never forget your wheelie somewhere along I 76 grin

Just thinking out loud here…

Fact 1. The official Rally days are Tuesday – Thursday and that could leave couple of days on each side of the Rally if one takes that whole weak off.
Fact 2. Colorado and the areas close to Salida have some amazing off-road routes & trails.

=> I’m just starting the planning here so everything is totally open at this point but I might explore some of the passes in the area between Aspen and Crested Butte on my way to Salida.

=> And maybe do a day or two more of dirt riding around the Ouray area on the way out.

I need to do much more planning but I’ll just throw this seed out there in case it takes root and turns into something real.
Anyone wants to join, give suggestions, or simply tell me not to do it, I want to hear it all.

David and I will be there probably from Sunday to Friday, I'm sure he will be up for an off road adventure sometime during the week for sure? Depending on Lawnchair boy, I think I will get to ride shotgun for the off road adventure part. Will be on my own bike for the paved stuff! clap

Susan and I will be headed there from the MOA. Using the Butler Map and a Colorado Rides book to really plan. Took Susan up Phantom Canyon back in the early 80's by Jeep. Really beautiful dirt road.

Driven through Salida once about 10 years ago...beautiful area. According to Google Maps...I live 129 miles or 2 hours 46 minutes from Salida. I might have to stop by and say howdy wave

Mine had a dead battery once. I rode it every day for a week and then when the weekend came the battery was dead. BUT at least it happened in the driveway and not 234 miles away at the destination I was headed for........

Things are good now and ready for the trip to Colorado!! On the look out for other Italians to hang out with!! clap

Ray, what's your intended route west? I was thinking of riding out to Michigan then north to the upper P. From there, go west young man on RT 2 out to Glacier. Think you may have BTDT?

I'll be traveling from the MOA in Sedalia,MO traveling due south avoiding the "Kansas Curve" into Arkansas before heading west to Oklahoma, Texas (hill country maybe?), New Mexico then picking up the Continental Divide north to Salida, and UNrally.

For anyone who's interested, I'm slabbing from Olympia to SLC, then taking twisties in to Torrey.

I'll be spending the night and then taking a magnificent route from Torrey to Salida, including a fantastic detour down through Lake City and Creede, CO, where I'll ride for 120 miles and only make about 25 miles of forward progress.

I don't have exact departure days, but I will likely leave at O-dark on Friday, 7/20, spend that night in Twin Falls, and Saturday evening in Torrey (breathtaking sunset and BAKED spaghetti at The Patio).

Sunday I'll be riding to Montrose, CO.

Monday I'm spending the day in Montrose on business, before leaving around 2PM for Salida, my delicious detour, and a 5PM arrival.

The Un organizers tell me that's just about the time they expect to have the beer properly chilled.

I wouldn't mind company capable of 500-to-700-mile days. Room sharing a possibility.

I'm with ya RevRay.... my excitement is bursting. Depending on rain tomorrow, I may do my 6,000 Service on the RT or go for a 300 mile ride up the back door to Happy Camp on the Klamath River, than head down to Forks Of The Salmon.

Sure will be good to see you my friend

I'm envious of anyone who can just jump on their bike, make a turn out of their driveway, and be in awesome riding territory...down here, I usually have to do an hour of interstate just to begin the good stuff!

Cheers,
Steve

Lake City, CO...one of my favorite places of all time! Sitting on a bench during the farmers' market, eating an ice cream, and watching the thunderstorms roll over the pass.

I'll have several opportunities to head up there...

Steve

I'm envious of anyone who can just jump on their bike, make a turn out of their driveway, and be in awesome riding territory...down here, I usually have to do an hour of interstate just to begin the good stuff!

Cheers,
Steve

I'm getting excited! I had to wipe the dust (literally)off my bike last night (after Richard went and bought a new battery) so I could go for a short ride. I'm looking forward to the ride to the UN and seeing everyone again! It's been too long!

I'm not excited. I've never been to an Un. What if it's hot on the way there from Austin (imagine such a thing!)? What if I can't find the hotel? What if the final drive/fuel pump/headlights/ad nauseum goes out? What if I go for a ride with SomeUns and can't keep up? Will my rear tire square off on the way? What if it's hot? I hate when it's hot. What if it's hot? Do you think it will be hot between Austin and Salida?

I'll be the guy with a sign saying

"Hi, I'm markgoodrich.
Don't take this personally:
I CRS, Please say your name."

Hmm. Maybe I am excited a little.

No, girls, I dunno yet is Suzanne is coming.

Just wanted to post here... any riders passing through Salt Lake City area... we are hosting too. See the other thread on the subject...

We have bedrooms, garage for any work needed, parking space, and fenced yard for camping if you feel the need.

We've had some inquiries about the availability of a shuttle service to transport those who wish to imbibe but not have to rely on their own two wheels to get to and from the bars.

I'm happy to report that Salida has such a service - Toasted Taxi (719-221-2783) - that charges $10 per load (NOT per person), per trip. The Gateway Inn will have their contact info readily available.

Another bar/restaurant that offers a shuttle is Wallbanger's but it's possible that they won't be inclined to drive us to their competition. Besides, Wallbanger's is but a few minutes walk from The Gateway so you'd have to be pretty stinkin' drunk to need their shuttle. wink

I'll pass along more info as I hear about it. I'm also positive that some other members will be trailering or driving out to the rally. I suggest you suck up, er, I mean make friends with them and maybe they'll haul your toasted tail(s) around. grin

I also see that Sedalia has a good selection of beer/wine/liquor stores, if anyone is inclined to have a beverage in their room.

Yes, Sedalia does have a nice selection of liquor stores but it'll be a long ride to buy their goods. Wouldn't it better to buy your booze in Salida? smirk

Good point! I'm having a bit of a mental block with Salida/Sedalia. Better make sure I have the right one in my GPS. grin I guess Sedalia, Missouri, is the site of the MOA Rally the week before the UnRally.

Howdy all,

Sometime earlier this year Whip, one of our esteemed BMWST colleagues, came up with the idea to hold a one day ride during the Un to welcome new Un attendees and help serve as an "ice breaker."

To learn more about this upcoming Un ride please be watching for his new thread in the Ride and Event Planning forum.

I'm one of the newbies to the Unrally, so I'll likely do the ride. Whip hosted me and a buddy at his home last summer when in Texas, and he's a great guy. Looking forward to meeting all of y'all! :-)

Blech. I've skipped a couple of UNs because I thought it would be too hot, this might be the hottest yet though it still won't feel as bad as W Virginia.

Our trusty Toyota pickup got sold off for a VW SUV. Over the last couple of weekends we've installed a tow package on the VW, and had it "turned on" by a local dealership. All the lights worked when we hooked the trailer up Sunday. I need to replace one wheel bearing seal on the trailer, and then we are good to go!

Buick is ready

I'm ready

We'll begin driving later afternoon July 21. If my Dad says something like, "Oh, you don't need to come with me to my high school reunion", then we'll leave a few days earlier. I might slip over to his place and whisper that in his ear as he sleeps. smile

Getting the keys to the new house on the 20th, moving out of the rental 21st and 22nd. Loading the bikes on the 23rd am, should arrive before dinner... Who needs to unpack anyway! Sure hope I can find stuff... Kevin (Caddis) is bringing his flyfishing gear if anyone (Hopz?) wants to try a day on the Arkansas with him, let him know.

Wow, so much to do in such a short time... I think I'll save the guided tour of the river for another visit. I hate to give the sore-mouth to all those Colorado trout.

Looking forward to seeing all you guys and gals again. Zumo has all the routes loaded, looks like about 500 miles for us. Most likely trailer out and unload at the Gateway.

See you soon

While I'd MUCH RATHER BE RIDING, the tradeoff of a nearly unlimited choice for what to pack is a real delight.

Packing a bike for a long ride is ... well, it's...you all know what I'm talking about. Getting all of your stuff just so, checking and rechecking, the garage door goes up and you launch a little bit, make sure the door is shut behind you...bury that garage door controller in the tank bag...because you aren't going to need it for a couple weeks...and off you go.

This time the payoff is purely the Peeps, and that is quite enough this time around. Some folks aren't here to even have the opportunity to decide if the UN is a destination this year. cry I will hope they are with us in spirit. I'm so happy to be going and I'm so eager to HUG EVERYBODY! laugh

If Mitch hadn't started that wine legs thread I wouldn't have had a glass of wine and gotten all sentimental on ya'll. grin

How many days is it now?

We have had two good evenings of rain now to wash the smoke away. So nice to see some blue sky in the morning and a clear view of the foothills.

I know Whip has organized a nice-and-easy ride, which looks like fun. Is there going to be another group or groups who might ride a similar route at a more spirited pace (not that I'd advocate exceeding the speed limits)(not that I can ride at a spirited pace)? Just wondering what the options might be.

Called the Gateway and snagged a room Monday thru Thursday rally week. Woohoo. FYI, as of three minutes ago they also had a king non smoking available at rally rates...

Cancelled my reservation at The Days Inn. See you all there!

Cheers,

Juiced some vegetables and seem unable to get excited about all the work thats piling up in front of me today. Ten more days till I can leave and all I can seem to concentrate on is the bike and what to pack ( same stuff every time ).
Usually , my boss catches on , yet he's just ignoring the symptoms.... no respect.

I am so excited

Good to hear you will be attending Dave.

Speaking of Bike-to-Bike... do we have a Channel?

Should be no big deal to change but if we had an UN Channel... we could get it settled before the ride.

Yup, I've seen and ridden that, AZ and CO are much better. The season is tooo short in Yukon and Alaska, Fairbanks has only 90 days a year above freezing.

Yikes, 10 days and we leave. Still have to get the BT communications working.

Kathy and all,

First time on the Board in 10 days. Got a call on Friday July 1st that my 90 year old mother broke her hip. Flew from DC to Orlando and have been her since. Surgery went well, however, after 5 days in ICU we could not get her breathing on her own and we lost her on July 9th. Needed to stay longer to support my 92 year old Dad who is having a hard time adjusting to being on his own after 70 years of marriage to a beautiful, loving wife.

Kathy - you are right it is about the people! I am looking forward to that HUG.

I will need to modify my trip somewhat, however, I will somehow find time to pack and see you all at the UN.

Bob, my deepest condolences for the passing of your mother. I remember a couple of times your parents come up in our conversations. Loosing a parent is always hard but it must be hardest on your father. Please give him a extra hug from somebody who is not THAT much younger.

So sorry to hear. Be safe.

For those attending the UN XI, beware of US Hwy. 24 near Leadville. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/11/giant-sinkhole-determined_n_1665481.html?utm_hp_ref=denver&icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl8|sec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D177887)

"A giant sinkhole that opened up alongside US-24 highway near Leadville on Monday has forced the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to completely shut the highway down to all traffic north of Leadville at mile marker 165 "indefinitely."

After several engineers, maintenance supervisors and geological experts examined the sinkhole on Monday, it was determined that the sinkhole is actually a century-old railroad tunnel that collapsed decades ago, CDOT said in a press release.

The depth of the hole is estimated to be about 100 feet, and since the depths reach so far into the earth, much of the soil was still frozen until very recently -- when the soil thawed, the hole was exposed.

7News spoke with Rex Goodrich, a CDOT engineer who explained why engineers decided it was safer to shut the highway down completely. "It's the unknown. Twenty feet away, there could be another hole like this ready to break through," Goodrich said to 7News.

The collapsed tunnel was reportedly once part of the old Denver and Rio Grande Western's Tennessee Pass Route. It was constructed as part of the Royal Gorge Railroad route in the 1880s, The Denver Post reports.

According to 9News, Union Pacific now owns it and said the tunnel has been abandoned since the 1950s.

All of US-24 is not closed between Red Cliff and Leadville, just the section near the sinkhole at mile marker 165. CDOT is recommending using State Highway 91 as an alternative route, as there is no estimated time of reopening.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) posted photos of the giant sinkhole on their Facebook page."

Enjoy the UN. (Without me cry )

Thanks for the warning. We were planning on returning that way. I wonder how bad traffic will be on 91 now? confused

Not fun.....thoughts are with you Bob. My Grandfather just went into the hospital Tuesday (I just found out this morning), and no one is sure when or if he will be discharged. I stopped to see him this afternoon and he was his being his normal stubborn PITA self and was in good spirits. Apparently that was not the case this morning. Don't know what tomorrow will hold. Not sure if it will be altering my travel plans for next week or not. Kind of in a holding pattern as of now.

The closing of Colorado 24 is a big deal. Apparently those arriving from the West might consider Hwy 82 through Aspen.

Would appreciate hearing any local knowledge on this alternate route. I know Larry's ride plan includes 82 from Salida but how is 82 for auto traffic?

My recomendation is to get to 65 east of Grand Junction a super, super road thumbsup. In fact it's one of those "run it both ways" roads. Then hit 92 to 50 and on in.
Problem on 82 is you are only as fast as the slow ones ahead of you as Independence Pass can be loaded with traffic and is narrow.
Depends on the day, weekends are worst.Several years ago a motorhome was just a little too long and was stuck on a turn wall to guard rail going east out of Aspen. Luckly the tow truck was there and we only waited 30 minutes to get by. I have no idea how far that bus had to back downto turn around. Signs say not over 30 or 35 feet.
Any road there is good. Wish I was there cry

That's exactly the route I'll be following. Will stay in Grand Junction Monday night, then follow that route to arrive in Salida in time (hopefully) for the ice cream social. wink

Thanks Dennis, but I've got a follow up appointment in the middle of the UN, and I'm not sure I'd be up for that long of a ride anyway.

Not paved hopz, except one section in the middle, but easily doable on an RT. Gets a good bit of use and is kept maintained, pretty sure that's CR 12, Kebler Pass Rd.

Highway 72 between Hwy 7 and Nederland is getting chip-sealed. It could easily be a couple of weeks before the excess gravel is gone.

Recent heavy rains have left significant sand on the roads around here.

So, let me see if I have this right...this being my first Unrally...and reading through this thread...it's called Unrally because:

Most of the state just burned to the ground;

All the roads are closed;

The ones that are not closed are covered with sand, gravel, and ball bearings;

The rest of the roads are under heavy construction with month-long delays;

The one open road is bumper to bumper RVs;

Temps will be above 116 at midnight.

Did I leave anything out? I can see why everyone is so excited. I'm especially excited because I get to ride across west Texas to get there, some of the most beautiful desolation this side of Africa. clap wave

Now, where did I put that other pair of underwear?

Hwy US-24 Just north of Leadville, CO is closed in both directions due to a sinkhole developed from recent rains. It is closed indefinitely. Could change some plans going north on US-24.

Now wait just a dingdong minute here! All I did was summarize all the whines listed by others. The only thing I added was wondering where I put my spare underwear! And I wasn't whining about that...no biggie if I can't find them.

We are going to avoid extreme W. Texas this time and head up 71, then thru Raton and into the good stuff. Not much cooler, but less desolate. Leaving Saturday morning. Looks like I should really consider taking my dual sport after all......

Laundry done? Check!
Pre-trip haircut? Check!
Clothes laid out for packing? Check!
Bike fuelled? Check!
Passport and champagne flutes at hand? Check!
Water bottles chilling? Check!

Guess all I have to do is pack tonight. Actually, that means watching my wife pack. She'll be flying into Denver, so her stuff is going on the bike too. I'll be ready for a 5:00 a.m. lift-off tomorrow (Friday).

Day 1 (Friday): Wadsworth, OH;
Day 2 (Saturday): Saint Charles, MO;
Day 3 (Sunday): Hays, KS;
Day 4 (Monday): Salida.

Below is a cut & paste from a previous post.

*******************************************

I'll pass along more info as I hear about it. I'm also positive that some other members will be trailering or driving out to the rally. I suggest you suck up, er, I mean make friends with them and maybe they'll haul your toasted tail(s) around.

Regards,
Randy

Now this is incredible: A week's worth of stuff, and the top case is on the shelf. Assuming nothing else gets remembered, this is a first. Course, SWMBO ain't going along. When she's along, all my stuff fits in the glove box, as the cases are full....I never said that.

We are aiming for Monday night arrival, but 50/50 chance that we will arrive sometime Tuesday. I'll post to the thread, Where Art Thou, as we travel.

I am bringing some famed Finger Lakes Reisling....one of my favorites is this Dr. Frank

I may have a bottle of "Grapeful Red" also on board from a local winery near my house, Ruby Hills. It's not bad for a relatively cheap wine. Hopefully there by Tuesday afternoon before the ice cream.

Oh, yeah. That was one of the Snow Rides, but probably my most famous. There was also the ride from Torrey to Eureka Springs for UnRally 2 where we had snow/slush on Monarch Pass, and then, of course, a little snow, rain, sleet, thunder, and lightning ride up at Torrey this past spring. Ride with me, you never know the adventure you may stumble into.

What's wrong with the weather forecast? It looks pretty great for the last week of July in the mountains.

I'm having a clothing dilemma.

Cannot decide whether to bring my Dark Blue Suit or maybe just stay with the Gray... Is the standard Old School tie OK for Colorado or perhaps too dressy and maybe bring the Rep Stripe? Foulard?

Thoughts?

Getting the gear together... almost ready to ride.
