Folks, I have some very bad, sad news. Quinn's (Bob Celko's) wife called me a little while ago to tell me he was killed this morning while out for a ride on his new Triumph Trophy. He was on the same 150 mile or so ride that we have been doing about twice a month on Sundays for several years now. His wife Janet said a truck didn't see him and hit him. She didn't have many other details. He was airlifted to UNC-CH hospitals and underwent surgery but apparently didn't make it.

I've known Bob for about 5 years now since I started riding again. Those of you who know him know what a friendly guy he was and was a great, wry sense of humor he had. Our rides on Sundays were as much for the good conversation over lunch as the ride itself.

He will be greatly missed.

Please accept the great sorrow of the entire BMWST.com family and extend to his wife our most sincere and deepest condolences. Quinn was a valued member of this community and we all enjoyed his participation, his help and his wit immensely.

Godspeed.

I only knew Quinn by his silly ball avatar on this forum. Whenever I saw it, I knew there was a good chance that I would soon be laughing. His last post was very funny.

For those that missed it, this link takes you to the day he bought the Triumph.

Thank you, George, for letting us know. This is sad, sad news.

Dammit!

That's terrible news, I loved the chances to talk to Bob on the porch at the Maggie Valley Inn as he say with a paperback book nearby.

Thanks for posting this George - such a heartbreaking loss for his family, for us, for all who knew him.

I kick myself at times like this. I didn't know Quinn personally, lost my chance. I believe he was at the RCR IV a year ago which I also attended. I recall greeting George with nothing much more than a head-nod hello in the hallway in the hotel as the riders were arriving. I'm sure Quinn was also nearby. In the frenzy of getting caught up with old friends, we sometimes lose the opportunity to make new ones. Particularly so, if we don't make too many of these events. I missed seeing Paul by a day at this same event too.

So fleeting, these moments.

Glass raised, love sent, Godspeed Quinn.

Damn, just damn. I aways enjoyed seeing and talking to Bob. Last fall, I arrived in Maggie Valley a bit early and stopped at Salty Dog for lunch. No sooner did I order when he walked in. He saw my bike outside and decided to stop for lunch too. The last time I talked to him. My condolences to his Wife & family. Damn.

Man, so sorry to hear George, he seemed like a very good friend. I'm roughly in Jake's camp, I think we exchanged pleasantries at a BRR once but I never had (or took) the time to sit down for a chat, and am saddened by it. Condolences to you and his family.

Damn. cry I don't know what to say.. I got to know Bob pretty well over the years. We rode together a handful of times, but mostly we just found each other relaxing somewhere at the hotels and chatted about life. I always looked forward to his quirky one liners. Danielle just referred to him as "The funny sarcastic guy who always carried a book". This is crushing news and he will be sorely missed

Very sad news. Always sad when you hear of a fellow rider; especially sad when you 'know' him/her through a DB such as ours.

Nothing rises to express the sadness this community feels as the result of the loss of one of our own.

God Bless his kin and those that loved and will miss him.

I have met Bob a few times at bmwst events, and was lucky enough to have dinner with him at Helen recently. His sense of humor and mine were very much in synch, so I very much enjoyed reading his posts (hearing them in his voice after meeting him) but I did learn to set down my drink, and make sure I had swallowed beforehand, so as to avoid buying a new keyboard.

Just as a reminder, here is one that really got me going.

At RCR 2011, my second bmwst event, I got to the hotel on Friday afternoon, and it started to rain, so the usual suspects came inside to swap lies. I wandered into the group, and met Bob, participating in the conversation. Some of us were doing introductions, and when he heard where I was from, he asked if a particular junior high school was there, Dumbarton. I said yes, but it is now renamed a middle school, and he related that it was still a junior high school when he attended for a year when his father's military assignment brought him to the area. Small world, our two sons attended the same school and had gone on to high school.

We had a few other conversations, and I will always remember that even though he was quick with a one liner, he was always thinking as well. Some of his replies on the board were very straightforward and thoughtful, while others had me laughing out loud. In person, just the same.

My world is a better place for having known him and spent time with him. It is also diminished by his passing. cry

George, thank you for letting us know, and please keep us updated on services.

Glenn

Saddened by this, but happy we got to share time with him while he was here -- even if just over this board.

In my mind he's still out there, riding along in this little guy:

George,

I can only imagine how hard it was to post this. Thank you so much for doing that. In all the times that Matt and I hosted our events, we could always count on Bob for two things.

1. To be there....
2. To always bring intelligent levity to any situation

More often than not I would get done with a 250 mile day of chasing Mitch at warp speed through some of Ken Insley's goat path routes only to come back and see Bob already propped up on the porch of (insert BRR event site here) ready to spout some form of wit that always made me smile. That and he will be sorely missed.

This sucks....

Rest in peace Bob....

Shawn

P.S. Thanks Mitch... I didn't know

Just like the avatar, if you saw that thing in the parking lot, you knew Bob was in the area.

Bob brought soothing wisdom and sidesplitting wit to this discussion board, and was a fixture at damn near every event I went to down in the smoky mountains. Like Shawn said, any time we showed up at at an event site, it always seemed like he was there first, sitting on the front porch and watching the bikes roll in.

Ride in peace, Bob; say hi to Paul, Dex, Gleno, and all the others for us.

I knew he had an account on the Triumph Trophy forum, so I created an account so I could send a PM to the mods so they would know, linking to George's post starting this thread.

On a whim, I did a View Posts, and found a couple of things:

1) His last post there was just before 8 AM yesterday, probably right before he went out to ride, and it was more on the humorous side, but not as far as he would sometimes go here.

2) Thus far, most of his posts were straightforward, helpful or asking for help, with a few wisecracks thrown in. Here's one of the latter - "I got a Bernetta sewing machine as an accessory for my Trophy. If I don't get my old BMW RT sold, I may need to get a new living room suite."

I guess he was easing into the new environment, which is nowhere near as North America centric as our community.

Bob being Bob.

He will be missed.

Thanks Ronnie. I see I indeed did meet Bob at an earlier event, just didn't correlate that with his board name. As I remember (and it shows on our faces), he kept us all laughing on that chilly night. I appreciate you plugging me into that memory. I was also struck by his graciousness. He will be missed.

Wow, I do not know what to say .... I am very sad for his family and friends. He and I communicated a few times as he only lived 20 or so miles from me. One of those guys I thought I would meet at a local shop one day or just on the road. Very sad ...

Prayers are going out to his family. I hate to hear stuff like this but it is always a reminder to ride safe, to live life to the fullest and never take family and friends for granted.

Enjoyed his post and he will be missed.

Quinn, Bob S, was hit by a delivery truck on Wednesday and then airlifted to UNC Hospital where he died. Delivery truck "didn't see him" even with extra lights, hi viz stuff etc. As in all things like this, tragic. I heard some mention of bikes on Monday for ???? but don't know any details.

So sorry to hear this. Seeing his "smiley" friend in Helen this spring brought a smile to my face.

Sad news indeed. I never met Quinn / Bob but I enjoyed his wit first hand when he made this priceless comment about Paul (Pablo) Mihalka:

A sad loss for riders and esp. those of us who read his many posts at this forum.

When available, is there anything riders can learn from a fuller description of this collision?

For those that new Quinn, I talked to his wife and son at the visitation yesterday, they both commented on the outpouring of wonderful comments they read on the board.
Both seemed very happy that he had this community as friends.

I would assume it was a right of way violation. The delivery truck either turned left in front of Quinn or pulled out from a driveway or side street. I have not been able to find a news story of the incident.

This is probably best shared, when it is time, by Nice n Easy as they were riding buddies and he would have any details available. Funeral was to be today.

I will share some additional information shortly but I don't want to jump the gun and share anything that the family hasn't already heard and had time to cope with.

Hi Folks,

Below is a note that Bob's wife Janet asked me to pass along. As you'll see, she asks everyone, from her painful experience, to make sure they carry identification in several places. Janet wasn't notified of Bob's accident for several hours afterwards and, even then, only when she received a phone call telling her where the bike was towed and that there might be storage charges. Apparently the state trooper removed Bob's wallet (and ID) before he was air-lifted to the hospital and even the hospital didn't know who he was. They, for whatever reason, had him listed under his first and middle names.

Hopefully we can all learn from this horrible experience.

(Administrator: Please try to re-post without the links my computer sees to be inserting in Janet's note. Thanks.)

Dear BMW riders and others,

I have been overwhelmed by your outpourings of sympathy and condolences. You were able to know the Bob (Quinn) that I knew and I am happy for him that he found a place where he could be himself. I am also very appreciative of every one of you.

I was not happy when he started riding motorcycles, as I worked in health care for my entire career. I have seen the damage caused by them and could not get over that. But I knew he loved it, and would do it in spite of my feelings. So I kept my mouth shut. I should have ranted and raved. So, I don't mean to lecture or be a downer, but I feel so strongly that you need to know that your pleasure has ramifications far beyond you.

I feel like I need to give you some hints that I think could have made this event somewhat easier.

Have identification in several places on your body. Things get separated in an accident.

Have a burner cell. Cell phones blue-toothed into GPS or radios get smashed and there is no way of contact.

On all smart phones load the ICE (In Case of Emergency) app. I know you have been told to load ICE as a contact but the app is even better. It has places for contacts and health care information.

Take only from your wallet what you need to travel. Bob's wallet has disappeared and I have had to cancel all credit cards, just at a time when credit cards could come in handy.

Take your wife, daughter, husband, son, friend, etc. and show them the emergency room areas of your local (and this could be surrounding counties) hospitals. They will need to find them when they are under extreme stress.

Tell someone what to do with all the leftover motorcycle gear stored wherever you keep it.

Don't think that insurance money can replace you.

Treat each ride as if it could be your last. Tell them you love them

Oh yes, I guess you should know, that I am writing this at 4 AM after being awake most of the night. You see, it’s hard to sleep, when your heart is broken,

Sincerely,

Janet Celko

While it's good info, I found it most moving. I could see the tears on her face. My heart & prayers go out to her.

Oh, & that trooper was an inconsiderate ass. He should be reprimanded at the very least.

Ms Celko, I am so heartbroken over the loss of your husband, and the overwhelming pain you are having to endure.

Thank you for reaching out to us, for educating us on the implications of our passion for riding. Thank you for doing your part to ensure other family will be spared some of the pain you are having to experience.

Again Janet, I just want to say how sorry we all are for your loss. I also wanted to thank you for allowing your husband back into riding motorcycles. If not, we would not of had the pleasure to meet Bob and get to sample his sense of humor. As trivial and cliche as this sounds, he was doing something he really loved.

Hit home. Had to think about this quandary overnight since I have a very loving wife, many kids and grandkids.

I think we all can understand the sentiments of a spouse, parent, or child. What mature rider doesn't think about leaving behind loved ones and family dependents (in the best senses of the word)?

Sometimes it is unknown to our spouses what compromises well-meaning bikers really are making so as to be around for them. I can't speak for Quinn, but I am sure many of us ride with an additional element of care thinking of our loved ones.

Here's a suggestion: each time when throwing your leg over the saddle ask yourself, "Is there anything happening in my life at this moment that might hinder my safety on this scoot through emotion or distraction?"

Ben

i know for a fact that my wife feels the same way. She keeps it to herself. Mrs. Celko's pain is evident and obvious, but her common sense words during this awful time should be part of any MSF instruction course.

I didn't know your husband other than through this site. we all know he did not want his family to suffer and maybe all of us share some guilt in that regard.

Thank you for sharing your heart, your suggestions and your admonitions.
