THIS IS FORUM WHERE YOU CAN SUGGEST FUTURE UNRALLY LOCATIONS IN THE EAST.

As you travel, by bike, car, for pleasure or on business, if you encounter a location for an UnRally that you feel meets the parameters set forth in the Guidelines Thread, please post your suggestions below.

Please Include just the basics:

1. Location
2. Some suggested hotels, each capable of housing all of us.

If someone likes the location and wants to create a proposal around it, that would be great. Or if YOU want to put together an UnRally proposal, we would welcome it.

Let's see what great locations you can come up with!

The East coast should be a relatively easy pick. We have the Northeast, West Virginia and the Smoky Mountains.

I don't think there would be any other location worthy of an UN. (believe me I've been proven wrong before) The North Georgia mountains would be included in the Smokies offering.

We have our WV & NC experts and you probably already know what they can offer. BTW, is heaven on two wheels!

We had an UN in NH and I thought it was quite a success. So, i'm thinking Lake Placid could be an interesting place to have one.

Some cool history and nice day rides in almost every direction.

This is just a conversation starter at this time but would be willing to help out in the NE if I could.

1) Lake Placid
2) West Virginia
3) Smokies

What say you?

Pat,

Good suggestions for sure! I have ridden with people from here in the second and third of those (but I always seem to miss the ones you make it to!) so I agree they should be under consideration, but they've also been done.

Upstate New York, including the Lake Placid area, that sounds like a good possibility.

Just so it's on the radar, I think an UN in Southeast Ohio would be a possibility. Car and Driver have been testing there for decades. I don't know about hotels, but that might call for a scouting trip!

I would not dismiss the return to any place we have been. After all, there have been 2 UNs in Gunnison and people go to the same hotel in UT twice a year for the last dozen or so years.

Not everyone has been to every place. Except Raaaaan, that guy goes EVERYWHERE!

The big problem with a venue for an UN anywhere from Albany north to the Ca. border is that the establishments to accommodate us in the prime summer season would be out of our price range.

That doesn't stop us from trying to find the right fit for us though! There are many other launch points available besides Lake George and Placid. For example, reasonable rates can be found from the Utica area, i.e. Turning Stone Casino and resort or others in that vicinity on the southwest corner of the 'dacks. The ride on up on Rt.30 would not be too bad to get to the heart of the mountain areas, Baseball HOF in Cooperstown or the wine country.

Agreed.

We are like the Olympics, searching out new venues when perfectly good places are already existing.
How much is Russia's Oly's costing?
$40,000,000,000.00

Even with 3-4 of the same old same same venues, that would be revisiting every 6-8 years.
That's like 50 years to a dog.

Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to dismiss the locations that have already hosted the UNRally. Obviously that did not come through in my post. Sorry I didn't make that 100% clear.

What I was trying to say was, if we do get an opportunity to visit a worthy site, that has not hosted an UN previously, that should get taken into consideration.

Can't say what the Admin team would do in a new location vs. old location decision. Much would depend on the proposal itself, the enthusiasm of the proposing individual or team, and locations themselves.

The important thing here is that you have all begun a discussion about possible locations. And that's great. Keep 'em coming. Or maybe even do a little research about a given location and make some calls and get an idea of what hotel rates might be for a group of 80+. Drop that info into a post, and with the ball already rolling, someone may want to pick it up and turn it into an actual UN proposal.

Having announced where the 2014 Un will be in the west, teams should already be working on an East location for 2015. Anywhere right of Leavenworth, KS. Those proposals should be ready to submit within a month of the 2104 Un, so that the Admin Team has about 60 days or so to work through them and come up with a selection in time for many of our members to book 2015 vacation time with their employers. For more details, see the UN Proposal Guidelines thread in this forum

Thanks again to all for getting this discussion going. Let's hear about more places, both old and new, where an eastern UN could be held.

Just over the hill at the Glen of Watkins I've stayed at the Glen Motor Inn and Seneca Lodge a few times. They're getting up there in years, especially the lodge, but they're where the F1 drivers stayed in the 60's and 70's. Might be worth a look. Also there's a big Beemer rally I think every September so has to be good camping.

Just happen to be having a stay at Turning stone this Weekend. I will inquire the staff of possibilities there, not setting anything in stone to speak right now, just to gain some information. As to Ithaca, I have been through there but have never stayed. I will see what other possible venues are out there in the Vernon Downs area and such. Stay tuned!

I located a Holiday inn with good options that are available also but will not be traveling to that area any time soon for a recon or inquire on group rates. Prices are fair and reasonable before the summer crunch. here is the link to the facility.......

http://www.hioneonta.com/location.php

Seems to provide just about anything we would need for a meet at a decent cost. They also provide a good array of picnics/ BBQ's and lunch menus. I forgot about mentioning Happy hour too! thumbsup

Food for thought.

Lake George is certainly beautiful, but summer will not be doable there I would bet, our family spent some time living in the glens falls area when I was a tyke, summers are crazy there, americade in June or July every year I believe. That being said, if somebody can work a good deal at the sagamore, I'm in. smile

Buckhorn Lake State Park in Kentucky would be a great setting.

The last time there was a BMW Sport Touring event in Kentucky, I stopped at Buckhorn Lake, and confirmed that they have the ability to handle groups, with group discounts, as well as a dining room that can handle large groups. Beautiful setting.

Buckhorn is certainly a great riding location for sure and the rates along with the venue seem to fit well within the affordable for most. Quite the savings on the Fall rates in August. I think that is because it is when school starts down there........

Many of the schools "down there" start in August.
This year we returned August 9th and students started August 15th.

The UN's held in August haven't worked for us.

In Florida schools can start 2 weeks before Labor Day and do.

My wife and I did a 2-up ride through New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine in September. Living in the south, where we rarely see more than a few nights in a row of freezing weather, almost any back road is likely to be well paved. Taking the same sorts of roads in Vermont and New Hampshire beat us up pretty badly. The worst was east of Bristol, where we took Lincoln Gap road across the Green Mountains. On the paper map I had, it looked paved, but was about 50/50. The east side was so steep that I had to use the brakes while in first gear. Taking route 100 south to Hancock led to repeated pavement breaks for road construction. Back roads in New Hampshire the next day were almost as punishing, although with less road construction. Maybe I just made bad choices, but I have had enough of New England for a while.

Ah Selden, You lucked out! Those are the good ones! Your right about the winter wear!

Just Kidding though. Many of the New England roads are punishing. Rt 100 in particular has seen many better years. I have seen many road reconstructions though and the pavement has deeper sub bases, heavier thicker slabs of macadam and concrete to prevent frost heaves but there is so much money and too much pavement right now to really notice a difference.

As soon As I ride anywhere south about 150-200 miles I notice a huge difference in pavement quality. Especially in Pennsylvania.

There are some problems with events in that area. They can be addressed, but it will take more effort than other areas.

We've done a lot of events there, but I'd go back there in a heartbeat

Yeah, the condition of the roads are a definite concern in the VT, ME, NH region. Georgi and I just got back yesterday from a trip to NH (Kankamagus Hwy, Bear Notch, etc). We took the 112 to the 118 to the 4 to get back to CT. The 118 was all ours but what a punishment to our backsides! There was also construction on the Kankamagus. It was beautiful country, though.

If there was a way to know what roads were going to be repaired/repaved well in advance that area of the country in the summer is stunning.

I would like to suggest for the 2015 East Rally, Johnson City, TN. Yes the BMW MOA was there a couple of years ago, but the riding in that area is great.

For those wanting to come to Nova Scotia. Don't wait for an Unrally. Drop me a PM, we can accommodate you. Lots of options for onsite lodging, 45 mins outside of Halifax. Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks Greg for that very generous offer. I was there last year and enjoyed every mile. Went to Meat Cove and camped at the edge of the world.

The tall tent next to the picnic table is mine.

Just came from a Victory Motorcycle event this weekend in West Dover, VT. Home base was the Matterhorn with additional lodgings available at The Grey Ghost and The Kitzhof Inn. Both within a mile, or less, of the Matterhorn. The food at the Matterhorn was VERY good and Joe goes out of his way to make people feel comfortable. The Matterhorn has 30 rooms, the Kitzhof has 23 rooms. The Gray Ghost has 26 rooms. The Victory event had a registered attendance of 128 people this year and all three places accommodated us well with room to spare. The rally coordinators arranged a shuttle bus between the Inn's between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM to allow folks to hang out and have a few drinks without having to have to worry about riding, or walking, back to their Inn. This was my second stay at the Kithof and I'd stay there again. Simon and Allison are great people and are very hospitable. An incredibly kind British couple that love their Triumph Tiger and Bonneville motorcycles. They love getting people from Mid August till the end of September as this is a dead time of year for them. A great time of year for motorcyclists. Temps are great, traffic VERY light. The Matterhorn has a large front open area to accommodate a large group of people for an outside meal. While I can't speak for him directly, I can't imagine Joe having an issue with folks camping on his property. Riding in the area is very good. A lot of repaving being done and road conditions are getting better. Unfortunately, RT. 17 is sorely in needs of a repave and almost un-rideable as it's so bumpy. Almost all the other roads we hit this weekend were in pretty good shape. Something to consider for a future event though.

To add to my comments above, The Matterhorn catered meals for us on Friday and Saturday night. Burgers, hot dogs and kielbasa on Friday night. The kielbasa was incredible. A pig roast on Saturday night. Another excellent meal. For those of us that arrived Thursday night they had an incredible buffet for $15 per person with Pierogies, Swedish meatballs, sausage and peppers and spaghetti. Very good. Everything was off the charts...

The Matterhorn also had a large campfire for us to sit around and shoot the breeze as the temps dropped after the sun went down. The Kitzhof allowed us to use their fir pit and have a campfire till around midnight.

West Dover, VT sounds like a great location for the next East Coast UnRally! thumbsup

Anyone live nearby or close that can take this one on? "TomK"!

Mountain Lake Lodge, outside Blacksburg, Va. I think they have enough rooms for everyone. Great riding area.
