And now for something completely different…
Mike Boomgarden and I are pleased to be hosting the 14th annual BMWST UnRally. This year we’re due for an “eastern” UnRally, but if you check your map, you’ll find that Wisconsin is a bit more toward the north and center. Here you’ll find something for everyone: scenic blufftop vistas, soothing river runs, tight twisties, amusing roadside attractions, and an extensive dualsport/off-road trail system.

When: Monday, June 22 – Thursday, June 25 (Thursday morning check-out)

Headquarters: Three Bears Lodge, 701 Yogi Circle, Warrens, WI, 54666. The Three Bears Lodge includes a coffee shop, restaurant, and bar with indoor and outdoor seating; several other restaurants are available within a few miles of the hotel. It also features an indoor/outdoor water park, so bring your swimsuit. cool

Event Cost: $47 per person. Register here on or before May 21!

Here’s what your event fee gets you:
  • Wednesday night catered dinner buffet with salad, vegetables, potatoes, and your choice of roast beef or chicken
  • An official UnRally XIV sticker for your bike
  • An official UnRally XIV T-shirt for your back (you will be asked to specify shirt size later this spring after we have finalized the artwork)
  • GPS routes for a variety of street-based day rides
Hotel rooms: Hotel accomodations are available at the Three Bears Lodge. We have secured a block of 75 rooms with the following discounted room rates for our group:
  • Standard double-queen room, $75 per night
  • Double-queen with pullout couch, $85 per night
  • Family suite (king-size bed, pullout couch, two bunk beds, i.e. bunk space for four people), $100 per night
You must register (here) and pay the UnRally registration fee before Three Bears Lodge will extend our discounted group rate to you. The hotel has access to our list of registrants; after you have registered, you will receive an email letting you know that we have added your name to the list, and you can call the hotel (608-378-2500) to make your reservation. Mention that you are with the “BMW Sport Touring group” to receive our discounted group rate. please register and make your hotel reservation before May 22; Any unreserved rooms in our block will be released on that day.

Camping: If you prefer to camp, the Jellystone Warrens Campground is just 1/3-mile away from the hotel. Tent sites have electricity, water, a fire ring, a picnic table, and a groomed flat area for your tent. The price is $35 per night. Please note, we do not have a block of sites reserved, and event registration is not necessary to reserve a tent site. if you intend to camp, you should make your reservation as soon as possible. Call 888-386-9644 or visit the above link to reserve a site at any time.

Street Riding: Routes for day rides in a variety of distances will be posted later this spring as a GPS file and as written directions in a downloadable PDF file. Hardcopies will not be provided at the event; if you require written route directions, you will need to print the PDF file and bring it with you.

Off-Road Riding: The Jackson County motorcycle/ATV trail system is just a short ride/drive away, with trail access and parking for tow vehicles available in Millston and Black River Falls (8 and 20 miles, respectively, from Three Bears Lodge). There are two separate trail networks: street-legal motorcycles can use the ATV trail system and the motorcycle trail system, but non-street-legal motorcycles are only allowed on the motorcycle trail system. All motorcycles using either trail system must display a trail pass; these are available for purchase from several vendors in the area.

Checking in when you arrive: After registering, you'll receive an email with a ticket. Please bring that ticket with you! Check-in will be in the hotel lobby from 5:30 to 6:30 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings; just look for one of the smiling faces below, and we will scan your ticket and give you your T-shirt, sticker, and info about the group dinner.

That's all for now! Mike and I will look forward to seeing you there. wave

***Please remember, registration (here) ends at 11:59PM on May 21!***

Yippee! The list of those who have registered was sent to the hotel this morning. We'll do this every morning, assuming we receive one or more registrations the previous day.

Registered and paid. Will book hotel after receiving confirmation email.

I have a question for the organizers: will you be able to scan the ticket on my iPhone, or must I bring a hard copy?

Mark--

Glad you're jning us!

First, we're providing the hotel with an updated "paid" list every morning. If you have trouble registering before that, let us know.

No one should sweat it if they don't have a paper copy of their ticket. We'll have a list with everyone's info, so it won't be the end of the world if you don't have it with you. It will make the check-in process a bit easier for us if you have either the paper copy or the electronic version that you can request from Eventbrite, but we want to make this as easy and pain-free for everyone as we can.

Hmm. Three Bears Lodge. Yogi Circle. Jellystone Warren Campground. I'm sensing a theme here, and I'm pretty sure Mr. Ranger's not gonna like it.

The last few Uns have had turnouts ranging from 85 to around 115. More people sign up closer to the cutoff date for the special room rates, due to schedules and vacation dates finally getting solidified, etc.

It's still about 5 months away.

I'm out on the road and spent last night at our UNrally site. As they say in some circles.."Ya done good boys"
The accommodations are pleasant and clean with a huge water park. Unfortunately they have a no pet policy. The dog won't be pleased.

Suzanne and I are in. We gotta drive across: Texas plains; Oklahoma plains; Kansas plains; Iowa plains; and southern Minnesota plains.

That's gonna be plain boring. Luckily the tires on the GT will not square off on the trailer.

Looks like a truckload of beer. Such a waste, but not nearly as messy as an overturned truckload of chickens.

As one of the organizers, I want to remind everyone that riding motorcycles on great roads, enjoying outstanding food and beer, and sharing laughs with new and old friends is very serious business. Please abstain from unnecessary frivolity.

I'm not kidding. Mitch and I take this very seriously.

It is difficult. Of course, to them, "Cow Free" may mean a room without one of these:

It just naturally comes with the room in WI. I understand they're kind of Gideon-like about it. grin

As for the Mississippi, I don't think the wife is aware that the Mississippi has any proximity to Wisconsin. Who'd have thought an F in Geography would be so useful?

Pat,
Still working on the gyroscopic adjustments required to allow east/west travel.

I thought it was something like that! grin

All in good fun you know, but man, you sure know how to make a guy feel uncomfortable waiting for the expected swift kick in the arse. rofl

Sorry Pat. Sometimes the mind wanders and other times it's just plain lost.

Sadly.....

I'm scheduled to head overseas this spring instead. It will be the trip of a lifetime and something my mother had always wanted to do. For those that are curious this is where I am going. Yes, I know it's not at the exact time of the UN, but it's a matter of only having so much vacation time. frown

Shawn, I hope it's your trip of a life time. I'm planning on going there in sept. so take notes for me. My moms parents were from Ireland so it's kind of a trip home for me.

A brief update from one of your UnPlanners:

I've been chugging away on the routes, and things are looking purty good. I have seven scenic, twisty day rides plotted across most of the Driftless Area in lengths to accommodate most everyone, and I have several "to/from" routes laid out for people who want something other than pure superslab on their journey to/from the event. For your amusement, I have also marked a long list of waypoints marking worthy (and not-so-worthy) roadside attractions.

Watch for the route file and directions to be posted by the end of April. cool

We've had a couple of cancellations, but here's the current attendance list (if I've mis-edited anyone's name, please let me know):

In addition to the usual crew of long-distance specialists who are willing to cross the continent to come to an Un no matter where it's held, this year's unusual location is attracting an uncommon crew of locals. This is a great chance for you to meet and greet folks you haven't seen before. The registration deadline is less than a month away, so don't let it sneak by. wave

Hey, it's nice to see that we'll have someone riding from Louisiana! thumbsup Maybe Dave C in New Orleans and I can get together and compare stories about the Pelican State.

Aside from that I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new members. I was hoping that Arizona Al would be there because I need some pieces and parts for my ear gear. I guess it'll have to wait until Fall Torrey....

Here's the UnRally attendance list as of today:

We're less than two weeks away from the registration deadline (11:59PM on May 21).

If you've only been to east-coast or west-coast UnRallies before, this is your chance to see some new territory!

I'm leaving with a schedule and enough time to arrive on Saturday, if I push a little. Depends on how I feel once on the road. But even if I take my time, I should be there by Sunday.

Signed up and paid. Still awaiting word from a couple of riding buddies from Ohio to see if they will be coming as well. I know, I know, waiting until the last minute. Just ask Craig about my procrastination. rofl

Looking forward to meeting some folks from west of the Appalachians, as well as riding the land of Cows!

Just made my reservation.

Won't be arriving until Tuesday. Since it is during the week, I will have my daughter (11) with me. She likes water parks.

Picked up a bottle of Glenlivet 12 for the trip.

Glenlivit 12 is one of my faves. Your approval process should go smoothly. Pun intended.

You can freely drink in your rooms and on your rooms' balconies, but Because the hotel has a bar and restaurant on site, they have a rule prohibiting the consumption, in general public areas, of alcoholic beverages brought in from elsewhere. I don't know how strict they are about enforcing that rule, but I thought I should get that out in the open before everyone starts drooling in anticipation about parking lot taste tests.

That said, the bar has rather nice indoor and outdoor seating areas, where I expect they will be happy to serve you whatever beverage you can think up.

We had that rigged. I'd go up the the front counter at the hotel and they'd give me a couple of free drink tickets for my roomie and me. I'd make note of who gave me the tickets, and tell Al (my roomie) who would then go up and ask someone else for tickets for his roomie and himself. So far, four free drink tickets.

At 6PM, the shift would change at the front desk, and we repeated the process with the new crew. Total, eight free drink tickets. And I don't drink (barely). So I gave mine away (mostly to AL) who tried REAL hard to make sure none went to waste.

Still, we ate various $12 burger lunches and the $18 chicken or shrimp salad dinner almost every day at their restaurant, so they made out OK. And I gave their restaurant a good review on Trip Advisor (the food was good).

Unfortunately, I will be a no-show. My wife fractured her kneecap five+ weeks ago, and she's still in the early stages of recovery. She is very much dependent on me, so I'm not in a position to leave her unattended. I will be cancelling my room, of course.

I was really looking forward to this year's Un too. Maybe in 2016....

As of 5/16 (stolen list from the previous page of this thread). There have been additional new registrants, and there's usually a handful more during the last weeks.

If you see this, you'll know you have arrived:

You can park in front of the lobby (center):

or head for the parking ramp way off to the right. The giant structure to the right contains the water park; if you're not too tired after your ride, you might enjoy splashing around there.

In addition to the main restaurant/bar inside, they have outdoor seating, up and down:

That pic was from the off-season last September; there should be more chairs and tables in a couple of weeks so you can enjoy your ceegars and Spotted Cow in the great outdoors.

Look for these lovely ladies on one of your rides (there's a waypoint in your GPS):

Also look for views like this:

and roads like this:

Gonna be a good time. cool

Mitch's photos really capture the essence of the area. Great riding abounds. If you decide to go on a "ride-about," not following any particular route, I'd urge you to generally head west and south from TBL, where you'll find the most interesting landscape and the best roads.

One of my favorite SW Wisconsin things to do is to just get on my ST and head out without any particular agenda, taking whatever road looks interesting.

This is very good advice.

I also want to point out that areas to the east of TBL are not as scenic. That area is low with lots of marsh areas.

The route in my brain mentioned earlier will be west and south. You are welcome to ride along or get with me at the lodge and I'll share the routing information with you. As Mike indicated there is not one special route in this area. You'd be hard pressed to find a bad one, but Hwy 35, the Great River Road, between La Crosse and Prairie du Chien is one road that really stands out and should be included if you can fit it in.

More advice for free-roaming riders:

- US highways (e.g. US14, US61) tend to be the straightest, busiest, and most heavily patrolled roads.

- State highways (e.g. WI71, WI27) are a little less straight and feature less traffic/enforcement.

- County highways are named with one or two letters (e.g. county C, county DD), tend to have very little traffic/enforcement, and are the least grandma-friendly, i.e. plenty of curves and hills and blind rises. You may occasionally find an unpaved road, but these are pretty rare in Wisconsin. Unpaved stretches generally don't last more than a mile or so, but if you're free-roaming, you can always find a way around if you prefer sticking to paved roads.

-Roads with more colloquial names (e.g. Spring Coulee Road, Rognstad Ridge Road) are generally at least as fun as lettered county roads.

-As mentioned in the routes announcement, state, county, and even city parks all tend to have public restrooms (though not all have running water). Here and there you may also spot roadside picnic areas that have restroom facilities.

Excellent advice.

As a cheese head by birth, when you see a sign saying "Wayside" it's the same as a rest area in IL.

Wisconsin had a Rustic Road program and you can find info HERE

The last time I was there, the road going North from Prairie du Chien was rough as a cob and the WI DOT put up a sign "Rough Road next 17 miles. Hopefully they have found funds to fix it.

You can take a break on those backroads and not see or hear any traffic for ten minutes:

Hwy 33 between La Crosse and Reedsburg is another great ride. Wish I was able to make this on, I put a lot of miles on these roads on my KZ900 back in the 70's.

The GRR3 Rally is held in Soldiers Grove, WI, sponsored by the Madison club.

Lots of great roads around Soldiers Grove and I've tried to ride most of them.

Speaking of Cabela's...there is one of the nicest one I've been to located in Prairie du Chien, great location between the bluffs and the Mississippi.
