BMW Commuting Guy
Hi, I have had the R1150RT a little over four months now and loving the bike. However I know there are these power sockets (Image attached) but I don't know how I can use them! What goes in them as they are a weird size? How can I get it so I can charge my phone from them? I also read you can charge your battery via them but not all of them and then what machine do I need to use? Thread about charging via socket http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=559041 A BMW charger http://www.bmw-motorrad-store.co.uk/bmw-battery-charger-can-bus-compatible-with-uk-plug.html Any help would be welcome so thanks in advance and sorry for rambling post. kioolt
The sockets are not really weird they are just not what you find in the US. I believe they are standard for European vehicles. I have also heard that John Deere uses them on their tractors. Having owned BMW's motorcycles since 1982 I am very familiar with the sockets. You should check out Powerlet at http://www.powerlet.com/. They will have everything you need to hook up anything to your bike. You can charge the battery through the socket on your R1150RT without any problem. There is no special charger needed because of the socket. Just get the right type of charger for your battery. Bill_Walker
You'll find this plug/socket often referred to as a BMW plug, or as a DIN plug. They're better than a typical cigarette lighter socket because they're smaller and stuff stays plugged in. Edited September 1, 2016 by Bill_Walker Link to comment
George S.
Chappers, there's plenty available on eBay for cheap prices. Ones that plug in straight, ones with a 90° bend, ones with a USB socket, etc. Link to comment

Mike279
I decided to install an addition regular socket next to the BMW style plug on the left side of the bike. It just makes life a bit simpler. I bought it for less than ten dollars and it had a nice little cover that is tethered. The battery gets it's own pigtail to charge from and exits near the other BMW outlets on the left side of the bike. Again to make charging or checking the battery a very simple procedure. Powerlet
Hey There, To help answer your question the small socket that you see on your bike is a DIN socket and was developed during WWII. These are handy little items that you can use to power everything from charging your cell phone, powering up your GPS and powering heated gear. Check out http://www.powerlet.com/shop-by-product/power-cables/PWRCBL and you can see the Powerlet product line and find a cable that will suite your needs. Hope this helps Link to comment
BMW Commuting Guy
Thanks guys very helpful and since I know know its Din or Hella so found some great adapters to charge my phone and other accessories I fancy. I did a very short run today of about a mile and I could restart the bike so I'm going to investigate the charging via the socket as the battery is a right pain to get to. p.s I'm in UK Link to comment
BMW Commuting Guy
I didn't even realise there are different batteries! Link to comment
BMW Commuting Guy
Right sorry to harp on but in the UK I can buy one of these to charge via to socket but its £95! http://www.bmw-motorrad-store.co.uk/bmw-battery-charger-can-bus-compatible-with-uk-plug.html Does anyone else have another suggestion as I keep seeing on forums people using different makes but then how do they get it to work? I want to avoid having to take fairings off an attaching something new as I am not too confident on getting it all back on! Link to comment
Michaelr11
That's a special adapter for a Can-Bus system. I don't think your 1150 has it. One of these should do it. Has to be available in the UK too, for much less. Pwerlet to SAE Link to comment
BMW Commuting Guy
All sorted guys. Bought myself a trickle charger and worked liked a charm though the side power point. However battery did die on me again after a couple of short runs so I think its time for new battery anyway. While I am fitting it I am going to add a bit of metal to stick out from under the tank so I can at least jump start it easier if i have to next time. Link to comment
AndyS
Make sure you get a good battery when you change. You should be looking for a AGM (absorbent glass mat)or a Gel battery. Don't buy a traditional wet cell battery. Link to comment
Cap
RE high-amperage charging points... My 2004 R1150RT comes with those already. There is a positive post accessible when you remove the seat, and a ground post on the rear of left-side cylinder. Link to comment
id09542
My 2004 R1150RT comes with those already. There is a positive post accessible when you remove the seat, and a ground post on the rear of left-side cylinder. That came standard in the later 2004 models, the 2002-early 2004 did not have it. It can be ordered and I would order it if I did not have one just to CYA Edited October 13, 2016 by id09542 Link to comment
