Will it fit my 2004 R1150RT?

Will a 130/80 tire fit on the front wheel? Recently purchased a sidecar rig and that tire size was suggested as an option over stock.

Morning meinbmw

The 130/80 will fit ON your existing front rim but will be a bit wide to work perfectly.

Your narrower rim will pinch the 130/80 in at the beads so the tire center will be even rounder at road contact. Seeing as your side car will work/wear the front tire in mainly the upright position then I would expect some premature center tire wear.

About all you can do is try one, if you get decent wear & the handling seems OK then go with it. If you get early center wear-out or odd handling then go back to the 120/70 next change out.

Dirtrider ... I am concerned about the 130/80 rubbing on the fender ... any thoughts on that?

Afternoon meinbmw

Probably not but you can never be sure until you try a specific tire on YOUR bike.

A 130 tire is (on paper) 10mm wider than your present 120 tire (on a proper width rim)

So assuming the 180 spec is nominal & correct that means the 130 tire is only 5mm wider per side (on a proper width rim)

But your rim is slightly narrower so that pulls the 180 tire's beads in slightly when mounted so the actual (as installed) 180 tire width might only be + 4mm on each side.

I have a 130/70-17 Bridgestone Battleax on the front of mine and it works great so far, about 12k miles . I think that the 80 series will be to high and rub on the fork brace/fender support. Also, I had to modify the rear of the front fender slightly. Just drill the center mountting hole about 3/8ths inch further forward to move the fender away from the tire.

What sideecar are you running? I have a Champion Escort. You may want to checkout ADVRiders Hacks section. I have a thread there about changing to a 37/11 final drive.

Running a Hannigan Supersport. New to the hack gig so it is a learning experience. DaveBig from the ADVRiders Hack section lives in my town and has been very helpful. He suggested researching the idea of the bigger front tire. I actually received a 34/11 final drive today from the UK. 37/11 is so hard to find. Thanks for your input RoanokeRider !

How did you find the 37/11. I'm going to be looking for one.

I bought my 37/11 final drive from DaveBig. He had it built for a project and never used it so he sold it to me. The 37/11's seem to be more popular in Europe, you might find one on ebay over there.

Did your 34/11 come with the correct ABS? As far as I know they were only offered on the R1100S for one year here in the states and the ABS was different. Can't wait until you try the 34/11 and see how you like it. I am quite happy with the 37/11 but I suspect some would want something a little higher for running high speed all day.

Yup ... he told me about selling his 37/11. He has been looking high and low for me for one. Tough to find.

Have you ridden it yet? Have you installed the 34/11 final drive? What rpm at 70 and 75mph? Inquiring minds want to know. :)
