2004 R1150RT Catastrophic Engine Failure - What Model Years are Direct Swap

My 2004 R1150RT gave up the ghost on Tuesday. Early diagnosis suggest catastrophic engine failure with bearing material in the oil.

Planning to simply buy a used low milage engine and replace, rather than repair so I can get the bike back on the road quickly. I will then disassemble the engine in my own time and repair it to have as a spare.

Are any other model years also the dual spark 1150, or just the 2004? Did they go to 1200 in 2005?

Looking for direct swap with no modifications necessary.

To my knowledge 2004 was the first year for dual spark. I have seen 2005 R1150RT's for sell in the classifieds but personally I thought that 2004 was the last year.

RealOem shows manufacturing dates through 2/2006.

Afternoon TripleThreat

The dual spark engine showed up in early to mid 2003 & went through end of production.

I see there's a low-mileage 2004 RT in the Classifieds section, if you want to avoid the hassle of the engine swap (i.e., trade money for time).

The 1150RT had a limited production run in 2005 and continued production on a microscopic level even into 2006. However, I believe all of the 1150s produced in 06 were destined for Authority (ie police use/RTP) use. It's possible that the 05 1150RTs were all built to fulfill RTP orders, as well. Not sure, tho.

I owned one of the last of the 2005 1150RT's. I rode it from new to 40,000 miles with only minor issues like hoses in tank, quick disconnects, starter had to be cleaned to stop squeak, etc. It was not set up as a PD bike. It was just like any other 1150RT. So....you should be able to find a dual spark from 2003 - 2005 non-PD.

Thanks, Sky. I should have added to my previous post that there were no changes to the 05 and 06 from the 04 model year.

You didn't ask for opinions, but I'm going to offer mine based on my experience parting out two R1100RTs and an R1150RT.

Take Bill's suggestion an pick up a good running replacement. If you have aftermarket shocks and other goodies you can move them over or sell them along with other parts off you current bike.

If you find a replacement motor already removed from a bike you are forced to take the word of the seller as to mileage, condition, etc.

Bike is paid for. Not really interested in spending $5000 on another used bike when I can replace the engine for around $1000.

Current bike has system cases painted to match the bike and Ohlins front and rear suspension.

I'd still be taking someone's word of the condition of any used bike, just like I would be on a used engine.

Even if I bought another and parted mine out, I think I'd still be out $$$, but maybe I am undervaluing the parts on my bike and the market for said parts...

Why?

So when I swapped the transmission on my 04 it was bear of task. I would like to think I am mechanically savey, but my day job is at a desk. The process took me three weekends. I am happy I did it as I got to ride the bike a bit more and the experience was cool. However, looking at this photo, the engine swap will completely scatter the bike. Everything bolts to the engine. That seems like way to much work.

Full disclosure, I traded the 04 in for a 15. I was at 91,500 miles and was not looking forward to more surprises.

I have a 2004RTP converted to a civilian model. The RTP came out with a GSA transmission, slower first and 6th gears. it also was built with the same final drive ratio as an RS. I put over $800 in silver paint on it. It hasn't been ridden since it was painted. Wilbur down in Linton worked on it. I have been on disability for the past two years, taking a lot of blood pressure meds so I don't feel comfortable riding. Want to sell this and get a hack. I live at Clinton, Indiana just north of Terre Haute. Where are you located? I want to go to the races at Haubstadt this evening. All I need to do is find somebody to help load the bike on my trailer. Jon

From this point you still need to remove the centerstand and front suspension components so you'll need to build some sort of jig or stand to continue.

When I got to the final steps I tipped the remainder of the bike onto a rubber mat. I wasn't trying to save or protect the motor at that point, just get things apart. It get very unwieldy when you are in the final steps, and I even had a pipe stand to lift and hold the bike.

BTW, I cleared $5000 on my R1100RT, $5000 on the R1150RT, and over $4000 on the other R1100RT after paying $2000 for it. It is a lot of work packing and shipping the parts, but I thought you might like this information.

Interesting.

I'd like to hear how you packed some of the more difficult parts. Care to elucidate?

I did not send any of the side tupperware...just too expensive, though I did end up selling all three sets. For other items I watched craigslist for people getting rid of moving boxes. This was also a good source of packing material. I put together a good selection of various sizes to add to my Amazon boxes. In addition to saving any and all packing materials I also purchased a large roll of craft paper to use for stuffing. For things like the wheels (most with tires still mounted) I protected the rims with cardboard but didn't try to enclose the whole item.

I became quite good at cutting larger boxes down to the size I needed. Heavy items took special packing to be able to take the beating they might get. (Think along the lines of you package being loaded with a catapult.) LOTS of packing tape backed up with strapping tape is the way to go with packing stuffed to take up any voids.

There was no call for some of the parts so I ended up tossing them.

BTW, each bike resulted in $1500 to $2000 in shipping cost, and I still cleared the amounts previously stated.

Do you have any specific item(s) you were wondering about?

How about the transmission?

Engine? Did you tear it down to the case (with all those long studs sticking out)?

Did you build any wooden boxes or was cardboard sufficient?

Interested in case my '03 ever comes to that. Hoping for the best; preparing for the worst. :P

I sold some internals from one transmission. The complete transmission aren't all that difficult to pack and send. I never even tried to sell an engine since these were high mileage bikes and the packing and shipping were just not worth the effort.

The real issue in parting the bike for me is time and space. I'm in the middle of switching jobs, preparing a house to list, and searching for another. No location available to do a tear down and storage of parts while waiting to sell. Have a buddy who is a BMW specialist with all of the necessary fixtures, lifts, etc. to do the teardown and replacement in short order.

Then, I'll put the blown Engine off to the side to work on when time and space allow...

Space to work and store parts is a real issue. I was fortunate to have plenty of both.

If you change your mind let me know. I can have it to your house in 3 hours, no delivery charge. I don't want to break the bike unless I have the engine sold. Figured I'd let you pry the tupperware off and dig out the engine.

Under normal circumstances, I'd simply be pulling the engine myself and rebuilding it and reinstalling it (recently did that with my Land Rover Discovery II. However, I start a new job on Monday and am in the process of getting my house ready to sell. All of that combined meant finding a used engine from a crashed bike, already removed so I can simply take the engine over to my mechanic and have him install it... Don't have time, space, or the ability to accommodate the mess it would create right now.
