TEWKS
I know we have a few members in that general area. Ok, I hope! Pat Link to comment
JWMcDonald
It was a bit dicey... Home located in Windsor (north of Santa Rosa) with business office in Larkfield Center (just off Mark West Springs Road). Got a 4.00am call on Monday (9 October) urging us to turn on the news about fires. Comcast was already DOA and got the news updates via local radio station. Self-evacuated at 10am due to concerns about wife's health with the smoke toxicity and headed north. Loaded up the car and left the bike in the garage, crossed fingers, and hoped for the best. We spent the following 9 days at hotel in Fort Bragg, joining other mandatory evacuees from the Willits and Ukiah areas. The winds finally shifted to a southerly direction, and we returned home - the fire line had gotten to within 1/2 mile of the house, but no damage other than some smoke smell in the house. Fire got to the east end of Larkfield Center (just scorched the end wall) - fortunate to secure Servpro service immediately upon return to wash down surfaces and use their air treatment to clean out the smoke smell in our office and spent most of a week in computer recovery mode to keep business up and running. Homes to the north in Larkfield / Wikiup are gone as well as the well documented media scenes of Fountaingrove and Coffey Park areas. Highway 101 through Santa Rosa where the fire jumped the freeway is a literal bombed out war zone (to overuse the media talking heads words). Went through Hurricane Camille in Biloxi in 1969 - so I've seen the extremes. So many lost so much. Link to comment
TEWKS
JW, glad to hear you/family/home escaped the worst of it. It's something I could never imagine happening on this coast. Extremes for sure! Pat Link to comment
Antimatter
Sister and brother-in-law lost everything. They got caught by the fire and had to jump in their pool to survive. His work place found a co-worker that has a spare pool house, which they're sharing with another family who lost their home. You can read all about it here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/weve-got-to-go-a-california-couple-awoke-to-flames-crackling-they-couldnt-flee-so-they-jumped-in-their-pool/2017/10/13/ba1aad7c-b01c-11e7-9e58-e6288544af98_story.html?utm_term=.37c217bd4dd5 Link to comment
