Always wondered if this would be possible, looks like someone figured it out. A combination of lightweight, enough speed, a sand tire, skis, and smooth conditions...

Hard to believe this is for real! Particularly the shot of him under the envelope of a large wave and riding out of it.

Any way of checking the creditability of this?

I don't think he made it out Bob, and why they cut it. The ghost shotof him in the wave looks like it may have been superimposed. Also it looks like the Pipeline in Hawaii, few places break left like that.

There is a backstory, will post a link tommorrow.

At our CADS meeting tonight some of us were discussing the possibility of attending this, just an FYI for others.

Hey, I thought you worked for BMW? ;)

Ok, where's the closest KTM dealer to Tewksbury? How could you not have a good time attending something like that!

Nah independent contractor, just go with the flow.

The rally does look like fun, will report if any of us make it.

My buddy Dave picked up a slightly used one of these, doubt he'll be doing all this, but fun to watch anyway.

Lyrics

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour on my German motorcycle

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour like the bullet from a rifle

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour got pulled over by a vice cop

I pay the ticket that he give me then I park it on the sidewalk

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour and I drive it like it’s stolen

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour like i’m blitzing into Poland

Purrin’ like the motor in a triple decker Fokker

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour and I drive her like I stole her

Ooo, she like to run, baby eat up the miles

Ooo, she gonna do it in Bavarian style

Ooo, she like to run, blonde hair and blue eyes

Open up the throttle, baby, wide, wide, wide

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour on my German motorcycle

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour and she’s chafin’ at the bridle

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour on my sexy Munich eyeful

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour on my German motorcycle

I’m makin’ ninety miles an hour on my German motorcyle

Hurt a little less with every mile west that I go

Makin’ ninety mile an hour on the Yellowhead to Jasper

There’s a girl I wanna marry there, I think I’m gonna ask her

KennyH studying the Zumo. It was his last day in Colorado and we decided to ride some dirt south to New Mexico where he'd continue on toward Tennessee and I'd head back north. Right away he deviated from my route and devised us a shortcut across a ridge on some two-track, then we could tie back into it.

IMG_1200-L.jpg

He said trust me, I think we'll be ok.

IMG_1212-L.jpg

..it had 'adventure' written all over it

IMG_1221-L.jpg

IMG_1218-L.jpg

After Kenny checked the mudhole depth we decided it best to skirt it.

IMG_1223-L.jpg

I didn't get many shots in here but needless to say it was great stuff.

IMG_1229-L.jpg

Oh, there was another little mudhole I tried skirting, didn't want to get the bike dirty and all.. well it could've been that bald Shinko : )

You have to keep an eye on these things, they're unpredictable.

One of four passes for the day, we'd both done this one before but not the others.

It was right up your alley bud, you'd have enjoyed this, but it was before you got there. Me and the DR bonded nicely on this trip, it's hard to beat for this kind of stuff.

This guy was moving and seemed to come out of nowhere, he was one of the few vehicles we saw all day.

IMG_1355-L.jpg

IMG_1356-L.jpg

Now we were gettin' somewhere..

IMG_1360-L.jpg

IMG_1363-L.jpg

IMG_1365-L.jpg

Originally I thought this was Elwood Pass but found out from a local it's called Indiana Pass, and known by few as it's not on most maps. Elwood and Stunner passes were still up the road a ways.

IMG_1368-L.jpg

But first we passed Summitville at 11,500 feet, and a sign indicating it's a superfund site.

We kept moving..

At Hwy. 17 we split up, Kenny went south to Chama and I went back north thru Antonito.

The two towns are joined by a scenic railway as well as SR17 which is highly rated as a sport-touring route.

A couple days later I went for a ride on the Wee Strom over to Gunnison and picked up some bar risers to help with the ergos.

After that I took a north toward Crested Butte but veered off on a road I'd been wanting to ride, Ohio Creek, which eventually runs over Ohio Pass.

IMG_1475-XL.jpg

There were some nice farms (and barns).

Aspen groves

the final climb

and a nice meadow just on the other side. Kebler Pass is off to the left on another road, the two probably aren't more than a mile apart.

IMG_1528-XL.jpg

the other side of Kebler, it's not all paved either.

Crested Butte backstreet.

Funny, on my way out to the Colorado UN, I passed two young guys I mean under twenty young, riding bikes similar to these. It was a little weird and cool all at the same time.

Pat, these guys weren't that young, maybe 30-40's, probably good too because they were riding those things over Monarch Pass at night!

Later on I caught up with another chopper dood, somebody said he was the new mayor : )

The next day I went into town and "the mayor" tossed me the keys to this and said have fun.

Normally I shy away from riding other peoples bikes but some days you have to make an exception.

IMG_1611-XL.jpg

It is a big and fast, smooth, comfortable, good handling touring bike that you can ride in the dirt, and it's fast. Did I say it was fast, because it is really fast : )

IMG_1618-XL.jpg

IMG_1624-XL.jpg

I didn't get much time off road but found a dirt parking lot and did some figure eights in first and not surprisingly found it well balanced. But mainly I couldn't stop thinking about that 5th gear, it goes from seventy to stupid in no time, if you want to pass something, just think about it!

On the weekend Bobby Ginger (Caleb) came back over from Denver to do some more riding.

IMG_1628-XL.jpg

When a group of us from Florida were here last summer he'd had an innocuous slideout on the first day and somehow broke his collarbone. It was at the end of the day and close to here, Old Monarch Pass.

IMG_1634-XL.jpg

We picked up where he'd left off, needless to say he was ready to go : )

IMG_1638-XL.jpg

IMG_1643-XL.jpg

IMG_1654-XL.jpg

We took a few shortcuts off the normal route (I learned this from Kenny Haynes).

IMG_1673-XL.jpg

IMG_1679-XL.jpg

We had burgers at the new addition on the Pitkin General Store, Josh and his wife do a great job.

Been wanting to check out Napoleon Pass (parallels Cumberland Pass). I asked the youngster to scout it a ways and he said it kept getting worse so we'd save it for another day.

IMG_1688-XL.jpg

IMG_1694-XL.jpg

Usually I'm on a big bike when crossing Cumberland but today we could take advantage of some close by trails

when we got to the junction for Old Monarch I'd had enough dirt and decided to ride out to 50 and back over the pass, Caleb took the old route. Pulled off for one last shot.

IMG_1829-XL.jpg

At the top of Monarch I rode past a young lady with a backpack that was hitchhiking. A recent college grad she was hiking the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada solo. I turned around and offered her a ride at least partway down the mountain. She was loaded down and not attired for the task but we made it work, and I was happy to add to her adventure : )

Bill, I went up over "Old Monarch Pass" a couple weeks ago. Nice super highway. We could haul butt on it. Also had lunch in Pitkin. Good BLT! Went up "Alpine Tunnel" again.

Went up "Engineer Pass" out of Ouray. Really rocky and a little technical the bottom few miles. My friend had a couple mishaps going up. Came down it in a driving rain and hail/thunder/lightning storm. Hung out in a little building in Animas Forks til it stopped, about an hour. Wet gloves made for frozen paws riding into Silverton. Give me a call.

Her name wasn't Cheryl Strayed was it? Oh to be young for sure...

All of my Ouray to Silverton trips have been pavement. Getting use to my new GSA now, may not be light enough for some of that but we shall see come next June!

Mickey it might have been Cheryl not sure tho it was a few months ago. She was from a PNW state.

Lots of easy dirt for big bikes out there, will mention some later.

Thanks TNT been following your rides too, like the ride, fish, ride concept want to try that someday. Hey, you can put your stuff oner here if you want, would fit in good.

Pat, I went past at 70, she was cute, what can I say : )
