A combination of lightweight, enough speed, a sand tire, skis, and smooth conditions... Hard to believe this is for real! Particularly the shot of him under the envelope of a large wave and riding out of it. Any way of checking the creditability of this? Link to comment
roadscholar
I don't think he made it out Bob, and why they cut it. The ghost shotof him in the wave looks like it may have been superimposed. Also it looks like the Pipeline in Hawaii, few places break left like that. There is a backstory, will post a link tommorrow. Link to comment

roadscholar
Nah independent contractor, just go with the flow. The rally does look like fun, will report if any of us make it. My buddy Dave picked up a slightly used one of these, doubt he'll be doing all this, but fun to watch anyway. Link to comment

roadscholar
KennyH studying the Zumo. It was his last day in Colorado and we decided to ride some dirt south to New Mexico where he'd continue on toward Tennessee and I'd head back north. Right away he deviated from my route and devised us a shortcut across a ridge on some two-track, then we could tie back into it. He said trust me, I think we'll be ok. ..it had 'adventure' written all over it After Kenny checked the mudhole depth we decided it best to skirt it. I didn't get many shots in here but needless to say it was great stuff. Oh, there was another little mudhole I tried skirting, didn't want to get the bike dirty and all.. well it could've been that bald Shinko : ) You have to keep an eye on these things, they're unpredictable. One of four passes for the day, we'd both done this one before but not the others. to be continued.. Link to comment
roadscholar
We liked this spot, the landscape is pretty interesting down here. sure couldn't argue with the weather. even found a few curves there was a lot of this, it helps keep the avg speed up. stopped in Del Norte for gas and a burger.. roadscholar
It was right up your alley bud, you'd have enjoyed this, but it was before you got there. Me and the DR bonded nicely on this trip, it's hard to beat for this kind of stuff. Link to comment
roadscholar
This guy was moving and seemed to come out of nowhere, he was one of the few vehicles we saw all day. Now we were gettin' somewhere.. Originally I thought this was Elwood Pass but found out from a local it's called Indiana Pass, and known by few as it's not on most maps. Elwood and Stunner passes were still up the road a ways. But first we passed Summitville at 11,500 feet, and a sign indicating it's a superfund site. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summitville_mine We kept moving.. This was a scenic area and as usual the pictures don't do it justice. Link to comment
roadscholar
We conferred it was a good day then rode through Platoro and down the Conejos River. At Hwy. 17 we split up, Kenny went south to Chama and I went back north thru Antonito. The two towns are joined by a scenic railway as well as SR17 which is highly rated as a sport-touring route. roadscholar
A couple days later I went for a ride on the Wee Strom over to Gunnison and picked up some bar risers to help with the ergos. After that I took a north toward Crested Butte but veered off on a road I'd been wanting to ride, Ohio Creek, which eventually runs over Ohio Pass. There were some nice farms (and barns). After awhile it turns to dirt has some nice views Aspen groves the final climb and a nice meadow just on the other side. Kebler Pass is off to the left on another road, the two probably aren't more than a mile apart. the other side of Kebler, it's not all paved either. Crested Butte backstreet. and I had to click this on the way back over, old school : ) Link to comment

roadscholar
The next day I went into town and "the mayor" tossed me the keys to this and said have fun. Normally I shy away from riding other peoples bikes but some days you have to make an exception. It is a big and fast, smooth, comfortable, good handling touring bike that you can ride in the dirt, and it's fast. Did I say it was fast, because it is really fast : ) I didn't get much time off road but found a dirt parking lot and did some figure eights in first and not surprisingly found it well balanced. But mainly I couldn't stop thinking about that 5th gear, it goes from seventy to stupid in no time, if you want to pass something, just think about it! Link to comment

roadscholar
On the weekend Bobby Ginger (Caleb) came back over from Denver to do some more riding. When a group of us from Florida were here last summer he'd had an innocuous slideout on the first day and somehow broke his collarbone. It was at the end of the day and close to here, Old Monarch Pass. We picked up where he'd left off, needless to say he was ready to go : ) We took a few shortcuts off the normal route (I learned this from Kenny Haynes). We had burgers at the new addition on the Pitkin General Store, Josh and his wife do a great job. Been wanting to check out Napoleon Pass (parallels Cumberland Pass). I asked the youngster to scout it a ways and he said it kept getting worse so we'd save it for another day. Usually I'm on a big bike when crossing Cumberland but today we could take advantage of some close by trails Link to comment

roadscholar
a few more side trails, really fun stuff. when we got to the junction for Old Monarch I'd had enough dirt and decided to ride out to 50 and back over the pass, Caleb took the old route. Pulled off for one last shot. At the top of Monarch I rode past a young lady with a backpack that was hitchhiking. A recent college grad she was hiking the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada solo. I turned around and offered her a ride at least partway down the mountain. She was loaded down and not attired for the task but we made it work, and I was happy to add to her adventure : ) Link to comment
KTM Doug
Bill, I went up over "Old Monarch Pass" a couple weeks ago. Nice super highway. We could haul butt on it. Also had lunch in Pitkin. Good BLT! Went up "Alpine Tunnel" again. Went up "Engineer Pass" out of Ouray. Really rocky and a little technical the bottom few miles. My friend had a couple mishaps going up. Came down it in a driving rain and hail/thunder/lightning storm. Hung out in a little building in Animas Forks til it stopped, about an hour. Wet gloves made for frozen paws riding into Silverton. Give me a call. Link to comment
