Putting the G back in G/S

Did a day of off-road training with Morton's BMW today. What an awesome bunch of folks. They fed us, kept us hydrated, and trained us until the last rider was satisfied they got their money's worth.

There were about 60 riders divided into four groups. Haybales to practice lock to lock slow speed turns, stalling on hill and restarting, stalling on hill and turning around mounted,

slow down hill, slow uphill, E-stops locking front and rear brakes.

Riding some Virginia single track...

You'll notice I posted the "it was worth it" version of the photo. I still feel that way. Thanks again!

Anytime, and good to know, was just going on context from the last few exchanges.

Excellent stuff Mike, the big bikes are amazingly capable using the right techniques and some practice, nice to see you getting after it.

Found this interesting..

I can't believe the way they were jumping those things! I'm surprised none of them broke.

This is Westside Rd. or FR 90, it runs N/S more or less along a ridgeline, it just keeps going and going, and going.

That scoot is awesome! I will most likely get one similar to this once I move back out to AZ for small trail scouting for the GS.

No worries Pat, if it has dirt on the tires, or going to, it's good.

Good plan Mike, I've used a 250 of some variant for years for solo exploring, easy to pick up or turn around in a tight spot. Had to learn the hard way from unsticking the old 1150Adv in axle deep mud or trying to pick up in bottomless sand.

Just about I think! Have to pick up a patch kit & front tube just in case. Never done it but heard you can use a front tube in the rear tire if need be. (space savings) Ever come across that?

Can't believe there were still pockets of snow on Old Monarch! Looks Nice!

21" works fine. But, just don't get flats. Side note and probably will jinx myself, but in over 20 years going to CO and the rocks, none of my bros that went on trips with me ever had a flat. We all run medium/hd tubes and give up a little traction and front end bite by running a little higher pressure than we did in normal trail riding out here. About 18 front and 16 rear min.

Good to hear and I like that idea!:thumbsup: Don't think it was made public and don't know the details but hope all is well from your early Colorado departure.

Just talked to Doug, mostly a false alarm and something us old(er) guys deal with for one reason or another from time to time, sounds like it's all good.

Things didn't go quite as we'd planned but it was fun while it lasted, getting to finally meet Doug was great and the ensuing BS sessions memorable. We'd found a connection here on the board over the last few years, both of us teenagers in the 60's and following eerily similar paths to budding gearheads. We started on CB110's (Honda 50 Sport), and later had Honda Scramblers (hopes of a dirtbike but sadly no, although not for trying). I was tackling orange groves on the beast and Doug sent me a photo of his 3 feet off the ground and doing big donuts on Pismo Beach. Ironically I'd been perfecting my own donuts at low tide in Daytona.

Then came an assortment of musclecars both of us had. Doug stuck with them becoming a tuner and racer of note. I went another route with old MB's and P-cars and ended up racing the latter. Alhough now it's almost come full circle, Doug drives a P-car and has Mercedes camper, my favorite truck has a 454 in it : )

East meets West..

Good times Doug, we'll pick it up where we left off another day.

Late yesterday a few of us got down to the forest (Ocala Nat.) to lay down some tracks for next year's Trans-Fla ride. Three of us were on dual-sports which are fun but Scott rode his 12GSA, a handful and constant workout in this stuff. He's in shape but said he was still sore this morning from fighting the pig (and picking up a few times), we rode for 3 hours straight and most of it was tougher than what's in the video.

some actual G in the GS

Great story, thanks!

Funny about your & Doug's similar interests growing up. You remember Jim from the Trans-Florida ride. We met 21 years ago when he joined the FD up here. Now he grew up in the next town over & I never knew or met him. Over the years while growing up, we found that at approximately the same times we've owned a bunch of similar bikes & cars. I guess this means ;) I'll have to figure out a way to drag his arse out to Colorado someday! :D

What a hoot bringing it home. It's always interesting riding a bike with no hp. Into a head wind best it would do in 6th was 50mph. 5th brought it up to over 60. It needs lower gearing. That's coming. Very smooth motor. Feels like a little more bottom end than my WR but not nearly as much up top. Soft old mans suspension, BILL! Riding position ok but I will install a little lower pegs for ease of standing. This will be quite a difference from my KTM  Can't wait to get to ride it back to back with fast orange.

Rode some power lines just a little bit ago and came across 3 deer. They watched and waited until the phone camera came out and then darted off to the wood line.

What tail bag are you running on that bike? It looks interesting.

I had an (unfortunate) encounter with a log/tree/bush last weekend so am now looking for a new tail bag.

Are you happy with it?

Does it seem hearty enough to hold up to very rough usage?

I've only had it on the bike for a couple of weeks now but I think, as far as soft luggage goes, it's probably some of the best I've seen.

KTM Doug has some Colorado time with one and I believe he rated it favorable! Well, except for his leg catching it while dismounting the bike and going down.

(Thanks Doug, I think, every time I dismount because of that story)

That type of get-off has a lot to do with my current bag's poor state of health, only mine happened while at some speed. BUT, that is why I use SOFT luggage (better the luggage damage than my leg)

When those three are in close proximity things can get tricky. I don;t know in your case dirtrider but sometimes jumping a log, a branch or bush just happens to be hanging right over where the log is, requiring a turn of the head or looking straight down as you jump it.

I call it Murphy's third law of dirt riding, just when you most need to keep your balance, your equilibrium gets messed up by turning your head in a different direction. Results vary from lucky to not so good : )

  • 3 weeks later...

Great pictures and stories Bill! Don't know how you keep those thousands of pictures sorted. I found this thread and got tired after 22 pages, will continue it later. Great videos, really liked Chris Birch (trials background, interesting).

Big T came over and talked to me first day at Red Lodge, would never have recognized him out of gear and off the WR250R.

Never intended to take the 1190 Adv offroad, but ran up to a watch/fire tower with a group and for first time actually put it in offroad, which allowed the back end to act like a dirt bike, pretty cool.

Keep it up Bill, you are the best!

Okay finished. Pretty cool reading the searching for and ending up with the WR250R Pat, I knew the ending, but didn't know the beginning of the story.

Really nice looking bike BEFORE the trip, you pretty much took it to everything I have ever heard of on this one trip.

Oh, Bill, seems like every picture you show of your bike down or stuck, I was there! Great memories.

P.S. Allemans KTM, Suzuki, Yamaha CLOSED a week ago, can't sell any of the bikes. 18 wheeler and Suzuki rep was there this morning taking inventory before loading them up. Sad.

Thanks Dave, love it when a plan actually comes together!

A quick story, I heard about your bike's attraction to the boys in blue and their radar guns on the Saturday ride. (sorry to hear bout that) After dinner in town I pulled up to the curb in my truck waiting for Bill to come out of the restraunt when an 1190 came rolling by. Me being a bit of a wise arse, I stuck my arm out the window motioning the bike to slow down thinking it was you. :/

The guy stops & looks at me like WTF! Oops, sorry dude thought you were Dave.

That is funny! Someone said why didn't I run radar detector? (I have Escort at home), would not have helped, I was being stupid in bad places. 2 riders behind me said they only got a hit when I got lit up.

The 2nd one 7 miles north of Paonia on 133 was terrible, just passed 45 sign, then 55 sign, I was slowly accelerating expecting 65 around the corner, instead got radar, I was doing 68. Tried to talk him out of it to no avail. Would also have helped if I had been aware of "Top of the Rockies" Rally in Paonia.

That turned out to be a long day, sat 4 hours on side of the road at that last ticket, because K1200GT (riding behind me) would not restart after the pull over, EWS. No cell, had to go back to Paonia for coverage and drinks and snack.

Whip and gang came to pick us up with a truck (no ramp), didn't get in till 9ish pm, Monarch in the dark with dark lenses was an adventure, thousands of bugs.

You should see it from a KTM dirtbike with a 3 candlepower headlight.

Thanks for the great picture!

I never leave home without them

I keep a pair stuffed in the pocket of my tank bag wrapped in a cotton cloth. I can't tell you how many times I was glad I had them there.
