TomTom GPS

I've noticed that Garmin seems to be the preferred GPS around here, but a few years ago I got a TomTom XL for Xmas. Used it a little, but with Google maps on the phone I didn't have much need for it. I pulled the unit out of mothballs this morning, but when I turn it on it says "No maps found". Did some research and most likely the map file has corrupted and of course I don't have a backup file. TomTom wants $70+ for updates. I can get whole unit off of Craigslist for $40 so that seems like a waste of money when all I really want to know is if the thing will work. Does anyone out there have a current map file they would be willing to share?
