Doug 55
Hi, Wondering if, for weather protection, my Escort radar detector can be run from inside the "glove box" without losing effectiveness of detection? TIA for any advice!!! - Doug Rainy Seattle WA Link to comment
OoPEZoO
Radar detection will work just fine, but you will lose laser detection. Weather that is a big deal or not depends on what you normally get hit with. For instance, the only thing around here that uses laser are speed cameras in MD. Link to comment
Doug 55
Thanks for the info! ... regarding laser, generally it seems to alert so suddenly that it's just "notification of a ticket you are about to get" so not much lost there =:O Link to comment
na1g
Any metal between your detector and the radar gun will effect your reception. Look for fairing stays, fork tubes, wiring bundles, etc that would be in front of the detector. BTW, I agree with you, Doug, on the usefulness of LIDAR (laser) detectors. You might get lucky and catch a little scatter off another vehicle being checked, but usually you won't get that lucky. Officers are trained to target the front license plate on a car or the headlight of a car or motorcycle, both very good reflectors. With the narrow laser beam, compared to radar, you really can't make the case that the officer identified the wrong vehicle. If you are speeding you are toast. pete Link to comment
markgoodrich
What Na1g says about metal, and LIDAR. I mounted my Escort under the fairing, ON the right fairing stay of my 06RT, just used a little foam to cushion it, and a couple zip ties in an "X" pattern. Been there for years. I have all lights turned off, sound through my autocom. Based on watching riding buddies' brake lights, mine alerts as early as more visible mounts. LEO sees the RD, you get no break.... OoPEZoO
I agree. I have my tank bag wired for electric and keep it in there. I wired the audio out to my Sena unit with earbuds. Works great, out of sight, and it comes with my when I park the bike for the night Link to comment
lkchris
My detector is battery powered--Escort Solo-- and works fine from map pocket of tank bag. That gets it above metal bike parts. Sena Sr10 fits there, too, and bluetooths warnings to helmet. Only wiring needed is that connecting the two units and none needs exit the tank bag. Link to comment
upflying
If it helps any, LIDAR does not work in rain and fog. Link to comment
